Cultural Writing. Essays. GOSSIP is a collection of personal essays that covers themes from a woman's life, ranging from love magic to marriage, old boyfriends to solitude. At the age of fifty, the author learns to shoot a gun for the first time and confront fear. There are essays here on on language and meaning--including ethical wills, blessings, and credos. And memoirs that chart a course including young widowhood, raising a child, a re-union with a high school boyfriend, re-marriage, and ventures into middle age. As Laurie Wagner says: "Sagan is writer whose obsessive ability to observe the ordinary details of domestic life--the nuance of motherhood, marriage and friendship--allow her to lift the veil on the mundane, the things we take for granted, to reveal their more sacred properties. Reading these stories reminded me that I don't have to go far to find beauty and magic in my life, that it might be waiting for me in a simple bowl of mole."

This collection of essays is indeed gossip. Sagan peers into her life, friends, family and comes up with some stunning observations. In "Family is Where We Find It" you can't help but smile as she explains family in today's broad definition. Here Thanksgiving dinner is prepared by Gwen, "My second husband's brother's wife's mother..." She goes on to write about how her daughter really isn't her cousin's cousin, but they are cousins just because they are.

One essay is a guide to writing an ethical will. A long-time writing teacher, Sagan's prompts for this "assignment" reach into areas that legal wills won't even touch. Such as how you dealt with difficulty and what you value most. With a knack for finding the seams throughout life's intricacies, she follows their threads to conclusions of reflection, honesty and humor.

This was an excellent book written by a true New Mexican woman. "what to say to a widow" was most enlightening and the rest of the essays were equally informative and many were funny as well. Becoming attached to your children's boy/girlfriends, New Jersey love rules, taking naps...I gave both my copies away and now I have to buy three more to share and read again.
