Literature of the 20th century refers to world literature produced during the 20th century (1901 to 2000). In terms of the Euro-American tradition, the main periods are captured in the bipartite division, Modernist literature and Postmodern literature, flowering from roughly 1900 to 1940 and 1960 to 1990 respectively, divided, as a rule of thumb, by World War II. The somewhat malleable term of contemporary literature is usually applied with a post-1960 cutoff point.

S. Eliot has the feelings and sentiments of a devout Christian and through the entire play, Murder in the Cathedral it resounds through the character of Becket who is a veritable martyr. This martyrdom is the pivotal theme of the play around which the other members of the dramatis personae rotate. Although the conflict between Church and state is a recurrent theme in the play, it never assumes major significance.

The 20th century opened with great hope but also with some apprehension, for the new century marked the final approach to a new millennium. The new century had begun with Great Britain involved in the South African War (the Boer War; 1899–1902), and it seemed to some that the British Empire was as doomed to destruction, both from within and from without, as had been the Roman Empire.
Huxley produced 47 books in his long career as a writer. Some critics thought that he was a better essayist than novelist because he cared more about his ideas than about plot or characters. During the Second World War he worked for the В. В. С and enlisted in the Home Guard, a volunteer armed body of men, usually too old or too ill to join the regular army. But his tuberculosis prevented him, however, from fulfilling this activity.
