Francis Beaumont, I do ♥ you truly. The structure of The Knight of the Burning Pestle is a double play within the play.

Francis Beaumont, I do ♥ you truly. A group of players is about to perform The London Merchant, a romantic comedy satirising that class, when two members of the audience object. A grocer and his wife are not used to play-going, but they fear that their trade isn't going to be taken seriously; and they insist that the grocer's apprentice, Ralph, be permitted to take a part which shows grocers in a better light.

The Knight of the Burning Pestle is a play in five acts by Francis Beaumont, first performed at Blackfriars Theatre in 1607 and published in a quarto in 1613. It is the earliest whole parody (or pastiche) play in English. The play is a satire on chivalric romances in general, similar to Don Quixote, and a parody of Thomas Heywood's The Four Prentices of London and Thomas Dekker's The Shoemaker's Holiday. It breaks the fourth wall from its outset.

Francis Beaumont was born in 1584 near the small Leicestershire village of Thringstone. Apart from his poetry there were only two; The Knight of the Burning Pestle was first performed by the Children of the Blackfriars company in 1607. The audience however was distinctly unimpressed. Unfortunately precise records of much of his short life do not exist. The first date we can give for his education is at age 13 when he begins at Broadgates Hall (now Pembroke College, Oxford). The Masque of the Gentlemen of Grays-Inne and the Inner-Temple was written for part of the wedding festivities for the Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King James I and Frederick V, Elector Palatine.

Written in 1607 by Francis Beaumont at the age of 23 who succeeded Shakespeare as the chief dramatist to the King's Men, The Knight of the Burning Pestle was one of the earliest anarchic English comedies. It was revived in September 2005 by the Mercury Theatre Company, the Young Vic and BITE:05, Barbican, as part of YOUNG GENIUS.

Beaumont Francis (EN). Let him kill a lion with a pestle, husband; let him kill a lion with a pestle. So exclaims the Grocer's wife who, with her husband and servants, is attending one of the London's elite playhouses where a theatre comany has just begun to perform. Peeved at the fact that all the plays they see are satires on the lives and values of London's citizenry, the Grocer and his wife interrupt and demand a play that instead contains chivalric quests and courtly love.

Had to read it for a British Renaissance Literature Class. Not a bad book and quite entertaining, but definitely one of those books I wouldn't have found on my own.

I would put it at a mixture between Shakespeare and Chaucer for those looking to read it.

It's a pretty good play but don't bother with this edition. Someone seems to have scanned a library copy and uploaded it to the Kindle system without cleaning it up at all. The scan was just terrible. So you get page headers in the middle of the text, interrupting reading on every page. Lines are broken at arbitrary places. Page numbers randomly inserted into the text. There are lots of typos where the OCR got things wrong. Generally, not readable, much less enjoyable. Example (chosen from a random page)

Tracie O'Keefe and Katrina Fox tell it like it is. They say that there is no such thing as a sex-change. Transsexuals change their bodies to align with their minds and spirits. Speaking as a woman of transsexual experience, this is one of the best books on the suject which I have ever read.
