The Suns of Scorpio book. Book Two of the Dray Prescot series. Kenneth Bulmer (Alan Burt Akers's real name) writes a lively Edgar Rice Burroughs pastiche, though it tends to be rather unfocused. There are plenty of action-packed adventures, but it suffers from the lack of narrative drive Dray Prescot is called to the planet Kregen once again for unknown purposes by the mysterious Star Lords. There he becomes involved in conflict between two religious groups that are committed to each other's destruction. As always, he pines for his beloved Delia. Alan Burt Akers is a pen name of the prolific British author Kenneth Bulmer, who died in December 2005 aged eighty-four. Suns of Scorpio - Alan Bert Akers (Kenneth Bulmer 1921-2005) - [SF novel - 07-21-2015 - 0619]

”Suns of Scorpio", published in 1973, is book 2 in the series titled "Saga of Dray Prescott". There are a total of 52 books* chronicling the science fictional adventures of Drey Prescott published during the period 1972-97.

As a result of my reading of book 1 and 2 I can more clearly comprehend the author intent for this series. He wanted to create a large canvas of people, beings, locations, societies, motivations and mysteries on an alien planet that would support multiple volumes - and I believe he succeeded. As it was readily apparent the locations, individuals and experiences from book 1 transitioned into the story line and adventures in book 2 and will, I am certain, continues in further volumes.

One aspect of these books I found disconcerting but nonetheless intriguing is the author's insistence of detailing the multiple Kregan** societies all with Kregan terms and terminology. I wish I had a concordance because the details are spinning out of control for this little head. Well, here is a nice fact: in book 5 we are provided a map of Kregan AND a 23 page glossary of Person, Places and Things on Kregan! How useful is that - very useful I say!

**Kregan is the planet circling the star Antares Drey Prescot found himself transported too

The narrative in this book is fast paced and chock full of incredible occurrences. One Dray Precott, an English sailor from the 18th century is instantaneously re-transported 600 light-years to the earth-like planet Kregan circulating the star Antares. He has no firm idea why he was brought here a second time but intuitively discerned that superior beings, who refuse to reveal themselves, intend that he fulfill an undeclared purpose or purposes. Adding to his consternation there appears to be two factions attempting to motivate his actions represented by a mystifying multi-colored falcon-like being and a white dove which occasionally observes him - appear to fight and then both fly off. Fortunately for us readers Drey is resourceful in the extreme and does very well in ascending into the elite status of one of Kregan's many societies.

I just want to be clear these "Drey Prescot" stories are pure escapist fiction in the mode of Robert Howard's Conan stories or Edgar Rice Burrough's Mars books. Although Bulmer carefully crafts his world with it's geography, alien races, mysterious beings (The Star Lords) and religion it's still just a planetary swords adventure - abet a darn good one.

One question that needs to be addressed is the necessity to read the books in sequence. I believe that you don't absolute have to - but your enjoyment of plotting discoveries and series adventure will be greatly improved if you do. Therefore if you seriously desire to read these novels ferret out the books from used book sellers like Amazon or E-Bay. The paperback editions of books 1-37* are long out of print but still available. Fortunately the books are now on e-book. The first five books are on the e-book titled "The Delian Cycle". Nonetheless as a buyer, collector and seller I'll always love holding a yellowing paperback 1st edition with the far-out cover and slowly open it to page one to see what's up with Prescot on far Kregan circulating the star Antares!

*Books 38-52 are available as e-books - never having been published as a stand-alone book in the United States.

This is the second book in the Delian cycle of the adventures of Dray Prescot on the planet Kregen. At the cold and powerful behest of the Star Lords he is transported to Eye of the World on the continent of Turismond. Here he battles mosters, humans and beast men(Diffs)started with nothing, but accumulating a number of weapons. The Eye of the World is place of conflict between the Zairians and the Grodnims, ziggurat builders. Much of the action is sea based on galleys with the accompanying raids by either side. In many ways they represent the eternal battle in the sky between the green sun and red sun of Antares. This is rollicking sword whirling action packed adventure to adventure written by Ken Bulmer as Alan Burt Akers. This book is currently available in computer formats and has been reprinted into an omnibus format as The Saga of Dray Prescot: The Delian Cycle. These five books are included, Transit to Scorpio, Suns of Scorpio, Warrior of Scorpio, Swordships of Scorpio and Prince of Vallia. This is the first five novels in the Dray Prescot series and is available from Amazon. This is the most compelling Sword Adventure series I have read.
