Land under England book. Joseph O'Neill was an Irish novelist. O'Neill was born in Tuam, in the Aran Islands, County Galway, Ireland, in 1886 (or 1878). A terrifying journey into the earth's interior. This is touted as a classic of science fiction, but I found it dull and depressing. He became a school inspector and subsequently Secretary of the Department of Education in the newly formed Irish Free State. Joseph O'Neill was an Irish novelist. O'Neill claimed later in his life that he was born in the Aran Islands, County Galway, Ireland, in 1886, but he was in fact born in the inland Galway town of Tuam, preferring, as a writer, the perceived romance of being born in the Gaelic-speaking islands.

Joseph O'Neill (1878-1952) Joseph O'Neill was an Irish educationist and author. Land Under England (1935), about an underground world where citizens are controlled by telepathy, is a satire on Hitlerian totalitarianism. He worked as the Permanent Secretary to the Department of Education, Irish Free State, between 1923 and 1944. Although not strictly an SF writer, O'Neill used SF instruments to make cultural and political points with great eloquence.
One expects a recreation of history but instead finds the Roman spirit carried to the nth degree in a society controlled by Master Minds, the masses having sacrificed emotions, passions, interests to the state. The boy is almost caught but escapes, with strange memories of his discoveries.
Classic science fiction.
