by Alejo Carpentier

El recurso del método book. I decided to read another book by Alejo Carpentier. Carols Fuentes invokes the Spanish baroque in his assessment of the Cuban; this is a suit, if you ask me, of a better fit.

El recurso del método book. Because the I quite liked the one I read before. And I chose one that was a bit thicker.

El Recurso del método (1974) (Reasons of State). La consagración de la primavera (1978) (The Rite of Spring; Le Sacre du Printemps, ballet by Igor Stravinsky). El arpa y la sombra (1979) (The Harp and the Shadow) dealing with Columbus. Carpentier's masterpiece, El Acoso, was originally published in Spanish in 1956 by, and translated into American English by Alfred Mac Adam as The Chase and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1989, after over three decades of suppression in the United States for Carpentier's affiliation with Fidel Castro's Cuba (Carpentier had been Cuba's ambassador to France.

The title of this excellent book by the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier refers to another book titled "Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason and Seeking the Truth in the Sciences" by the philosopher/mathematician René Descartes.
El Recurso del Metodo narrates how a Chief of State "El Primer Magistrado" deals with conpiracies engineered by his generals, a student uprising orchestrated by communists, and a subjugated peasantry tired of its menial status in this unnamed Latin America Republic.
The book follows abrupt time changes between present and past events. In the original Spanish, readers might have problems following the abrupt time changes. An amusing part of the narrative borrows heavily from "À la recherche du temps perdu" by Marcel Proust, when "El Primer Magistrado" and his daughter are in Paris, they start eating tamales and remebering their good times back home.
I suggest trying to watch the movie version of "El Recurso del Metodo" if you can find it while reading this challenging book. As a side note, the movie was directed by Chilean director Miguel Litin in colaboration with Spain/France/Cuba.

The story outlines the emotional detachment of a head of state whilst pursuing his permanence of power. The value of the book is how it outlines the dual character of nationalism, and the different approaches of winning and retaining power (eg. charsima, populism and rationale.)
This book is a gem of the "dictatorial novel", and a must read for those seeking insights on psyche of Latin America.
