Ward Larsen's Fly By Wire leads the reader through a maze of interconnected events as the protagonist, Jammer Davis, pieces together the reasons for a plane crash in his capacity as an NTSB investigator. Larsen has an easy writing style that is descriptive but keeps the action moving. The author gives readers peeks at several different threads of the story, with just enough clues to allow the reader to try to figure out what's really happening before the characters.

Author Ward Larsen does it, again, bringing us an even wilder ride than in his first in the series book, Fly by Wire.

With its revolutionary fly-by-wire technology, the C-500 had become the freight airframe of choice. Until a routine delivery goes horribly wrong.

Falling like a stone from six miles up, a brand new C-500 crashes in central France, killing two pilots aboard. When French officials take over this highly public investigation, they call in the best there is: they call Frank 'Jammer' Davis.

A retired U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, Davis is part of the NTSB's 'go-team.' With a reputation for getting things done-and for steamrolling anyone who gets in his way-Davis starts to dig.

But just as Davis starts his investigation, news of the crash is overshadowed by a more spectacular disaster: suicide bombers attack oil refineries worldwide, sending governments and financial markets into a tailspin.

A relentless Davis keeps investigating, but uncovering the cause of the crash, and its terrifying connection to this worldwide disaster, reveals a conspiracy of unthinkable proportions-a conspiracy he might not be able to stop.

Jammer Davis won't stop until he gets answers-or until somebody stops him from getting answers.

Well written, technically accurate, great characters, plot twists and a hugely satisfying ending. I will absolutely read the rest of the Jammer Davis series!
As a corporate jet pilot I usually cringe when aviation is used in a story. I figured that with Mr Larsen's background this would be accurate in the aviation scenes but was surprised at how good his writing was. Wish I had a novel like this in me.

When I read the summary, and reviews (both professional and general), this seemed like my type of book. I loved the older Clive Cussler books featuring Dirk Pitt. Instantly I was mistaken. The main character was uninteresting, I understand that the author went for an "all American" ex-military widowed father, but he just came off as un-cultured and unintelligent. The author tries to tell us he is smart, but some of the writing says otherwise. ""I'm Jason Lavender, her attorney." Lavender, Davis thought. Like the color of a flower." This excerpt from the book was just one example. To me, a smart person wouldn't even waste time with that thought, not to mention this was not an important character, after this part of the book, you never hear that name again. The chemistry between the two main characters was unbelievable. The main female character seemed weak mentally, and I felt as if the author was trying to rip off James Bond with her nickname. The story was also predictable, with a few exceptions.
It was not all bad, as someone who is not a pilot, the author did a great job with the technical descriptions of the flying, mechanical, and software information of the aircraft's. My favorite part of the book was the main protagonist, the character was interesting, believable, and not the same as every other Bond type bad guy.
The big problem was that I read this right after a fantastically written book, with an incredible story. It was like being a juggling clown, following a magician's act who made a building disappear. Unfortunately since the books were on sale, and the reviews were mostly good, I purchased all three books in this series. Hopefully the next is better.

Wire
Jammer Davis, it turns out, is NOT someone you want to mess with! An NTSB Investigator partners-up with an undercover CIA operative to find the reason why a new type of aircraft has crashed, and in doing so, find themselves as targets from unknown sources.
Author Ward Larsen has delivered-up a first-rate aircraft crash thriller, introducing to the reader a very tough and very tenacious protagonist, in the form of one Jammer Davis... and, in doing so, has created a 'hero' that so needs to be written about, again!
Great characters, very interesting, but scary, plot and dialog realistic to the genre depicted in the book (complete with some very funny one-liners) make this a winner, and one whose sequel I've already purchased, thanks to the great writing by Larsen.

The author gives readers peeks at several different threads of the story, with just enough clues to allow the reader to try to figure out what's really happening before the characters. Along the way we get a glimpse into the relationship between Jammer and his teenage daughter as he tries to balance his important work with the obligations of being a single father, and we get just enough of a romance between Jammer and the attractive CIA agent who is sent to assist with the investigation. This is a quick read and well-written throughout. A great airplane book, about airplanes. Nice.

I will say up front, this is a pretty good book. But there is good news and bad news. The bad news: This book contains the stereotyped cast of characters. There is the super hero who is retired usually under dubious circumstances from some high powered government agency such as Navy Seals, CIA, FBI or such. There is a super heroine, the staunch ally of the super hero. Then comes the bad guys who are always super intelligent but super evil. But this news is not super bad because you shake all these characters up into an incredibley arcane plot and it turns out to be a lot of fun to read. I guess that sums up the good news: it is fun. I have read three of Mr. Larsen's books and have enjoyed them all. He moves the plot along rapidly and always has a satisfying ending. Maybe not great literature but a lot of fun to read.

This book is a techno thriller with aviation accident investigation as its core. The protagonist is a single parent aviation accident investigator well versed in his craft, but with some personality problems, and difficulties in dealing with his teen age daughter. The author is clearly familiar with aviation accident (i.e. plane crash) investigations, but unfortunately this is not the case with regards to international finance, travel in Europe, and a few less important matters mentioned in this book. However, the story reads well, the author's style is clear if flat, the plot is complex (and in places highly improbable); this is a good book for the beach. It is difficult to write more without giving away the story, but the author is a talented writer in this genre, and he can easily to progress to five stars with more attention to details, and less space for cutesy side distractions.

This is an excellent work of fiction, with plenty of real-world truths that makes the story believable. The characters have been well "fleshed out" with the perfect dash of back-story that humanizes them without bogging down the story's action. I didn't want to put it down ... and I didn't, reading straight through with only a break for sleep! Highly recommended!
