A librarian, she married Professor Gilbert Highet in 1932 and moved with her husband to New York in 1937 so he could teach classics at Columbia University. Helen MacInnes (1907-1985) was the Scottish-born American author of 21 spy novels. I have been a devoted fan of Helen MacInnes's work since the 1960s. I have never known her to disappoint. Several of her books have been adapted into films, such as Above Suspicion (1943), with Joan Crawford, and The Salzburg Connection (1972). She was a thoughtful observer of politics and political events, which of course guarantees my interest.

Helen Clark MacInnes (October 7, 1907 – September 30, 1985) was a Scottish-American author of espionage novels. She and her husband immigrated to the United States in 1937, when he took an academic position at Columbia University in New York, while retaining her role in the British MI6, for foreign espionage. MacInnes published her first novel during World War II, and her early novels are all based in that setting. Later she wrote more about characters within the context of the Cold War.
