Kate Lundy, owner of the Tumbling B, and Conn Dury, her foreman, told Tom the rules: men from the cattle drives are forbidden on the north side of town. People appreciated the money the cowboys spent but thought them too coarse to be near their homes. Enticed to come calling by Linda McDonald, daughter of one of the leading citizens, Tom Lundy broke the law and crossed the line. Later that night, he was dead. Outraged by her brother’s murder, Kate vows to destroy the entire town. But when Aaron McDonald sends east for an army of hired guns, Conn Dury and the men of the Tumbling B soon wonder if the price of Kate’s revenge is too high.

I'ts Louis L'Amour, for crying out loud. There is no better western writer, and I especially like his non westerns! The Walking Drum is a classic, as is his seafaring and science novels. The man doesn't get the credit he deserves for this self-taught author is extremely educated and intelligent. I've read nearly every one of his books in print, which now exceeds 105. Highly recommended!

I love the L'Amour books, both the short stories and the full length novels. This one is particularly well done. The plot structure was exceptional with flashbacks (which I usually don't like) giving wonderful depth to the main character. The delicate and moving romance is unusual in his books and was very well handled here.

I found this fascinating and will read it again.

I don't know if it was because this started as a short story, but it was a different style than most of his. Strange cut scenes and a jumping around with the characters. It was like there were four short stories related to each other and just stitched together.

In the 1860's, the Texas ranchers drove their cattle north to the railroad in Kansas to sell. This is the story of the death of a town after a young Texas cowboy is killed for trying to visit a young girl on the respectable side of town. The cowboy's sister, who owns a large ranch in Texas, comes back, buys and fences the land around the town, and establishes a new town further along the railroad.

Typical Louis L'Amour; I enjoyed the story.
