This is not the current edition. The 6th edition is here - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0971581592/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The major issues (other than outdated information in some areas) are editorial / mechanical.

First, the book needs to be thoroughly edited when it is updated. The index is totally wrong. for example "workman's compensation insurance" is indexed as being on page 88, but it is physically on page 112.

Secondly, my copy is poorly bound and had loose pages falling out as soon as I opened it.

On the plus side, the information presented is excellent.

This book is a "must read" for individuals desiring to reside, work, marry (or divorce), invest, study, purchase property or own a business in Costa Rica. The author successfully compiled a broad compendium of laws, legal processes and governance in this country.

"The Legal Guide to Costa Rica" reads like a typical Intro to Business Law textbook and contains some dry passages. However, this should not give the serious Costa Rica aficionado or investor reason to put the book down. A lot of important legal ground is covered in just 348 pages. Even though the book may not have all the answers, it remains a handy "legal road map" and does a more than adequate job of preparing the reader to ask the right questions once in Costa Rica.

A minor editing inconsistency was detected in the 4th edition update. On p. 176, the author writes that after 2003, the pensionado-rentista residency program (formerly administered by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute) is now the responsibility of the Department of Immigration. In subsequent passages describing the current application process (on p. 178), the author continues to make reference to "Tourism Department" instead of "Immigration Department."

If living, investing or working in Costa Rica is in your future, I highly recommend "The Legal Guide to Costa Rica."

Petersen outlines the rules and procedures for buying a property, buying a car, buying insurance, applying for residency, among the most important for anyone thinking about moving (even part time) to Costa Rica.

He lays out the facts in a clear and unambiguous manner.

Unfortunately the 2009 edition does not agree with all of the facts on the ground. Things are changing rapidly in Costa Rica.
Mr. Petersen should generate an up-to-date edition...

This is an excellent guide of the legal system of Costa Rica. I found it easier to understand than the books I read when I lived in Costa Rica. It is very clear and written in language that it is easy to understand by people who are not lawyers. If you are planning to do business in Costa Rica it is well worth the price. It will prevent you from making mistakes when buying properties, or other business dealings. It is also helpful in the selection a law service sin Costa Rica. I recommend it.

Although I haven't finished reading it (about 90% through it) the information contained is right on. I visited Costa Rica and stayed in a bed and breakfast who's owner's wife was an attorney there. Everything said in the book was accurate, but as in many countries there are changes to the legal system so while this information was really valuable make sure you get second opinions when you get there. Subtle changes are like underwear; they change regularly and not everyone is aware of it.

Anybody who seriously things about moving to a different country needs to know how the legal system works, and what protections they will receive, and obligations they face. Mr. Petersen has written a very comprehensive guide to, from a legal perspective, to living in one of the world's greatest countries. Don't fall blindly love with Costa Rica, which is easy to do, but have a eyes wide open relationship

The very best source for a lay person to become aware of Costa Rican law and its application. Everyone who reads english and resides full or part time in Costa Rica needs this reference. In a country where an attorney must be hired by anyone purchasing a car,a non common law country where stare decisis and precedent do not apply, where it takes seven years to get a case to trial, You must be aware of the "LEY." Easy enough to read that legal students will probably be using it as a study reference. If you have any interest in the wonderful country of Costa Rica, you need to have this reference in your library! (anonymous)
