Shelford Bidwell (historian). 1913-08-12)12 August 1913 Beckenham, Kent, England. Long a reader of military history, Bidwell turned to writing his own books, informed by his own military experience, especially in the Second World War. None more so than his first book, Gunners at War (1970), in which he refuted the doctrine propounded by Sir Basil Liddell Hart and others that underestimated the importance of artillery and the need its fire to be concentrated.

The Chindits, Bidwell observes, looked more like survivors from a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp than victorious soldiers. In recounting this tragic triumph, he zeroes in on the two eccentric rivals-in-arms: Orde Wingate, a Lawrence-of-Arabia loner, and ""Vinegar"" Joe Stilwell. As Bidwell sees him, Stilwell overestimated the fighting qualities of the Chinese soldier and treated his British subordinates contemptuously. "Limey-baiting,"" he calls it, adding that ""Stilwell could not talk to ordinary men, let alone the British.
