Peter H. Reynolds crafts a quiet, pleasing story in The Dot-one that will strike a chord with children who have outgrown the self-assurance of kindergarten and begun to doubt their own greatness. His marvelous watercolor, ink, and, yes, tea illustrations are appealing in a Quentin Blakey way, especially as Vashti begins to go wild with her dots. Best of all, with her accomplishment comes an invaluable bonus: the ability and the willingness to encourage and embolden others.

With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark - and follow where it takes us. Her teacher smiled

My art students participated in International Dot Day (based on this book) back in September 2017. I read the book, watched the little YouTube clip and had the students make their own dots. They look amazing out in the hallway!!

My son loves THE DOT.
He is 4 and reads this book to me daily.

We took it to his pre school class last week and the teacher read it. She never heard of the book and she loved it and is buying a copy for the class.

Reynolds inspires the reader to take a risk and try something one has never done before, in order to discover new things about oneself. THE DOT gives a big hug to budding artists and shows how to encourage others. My favorite line is, "Vashti even made a dot by NOT painting a dot." This sentence gave opportunity to discuss various ways to make a dot, opening up the imagination of young minds. I have to say, it took some time to turn the page because everyone wanted to be heard. I love books that help children see possibilities in their own talents.

A must read for my kinders at the beginning of the year! Vashti learns that he can do anything if he never gives up. Vashti then learns to encourage others the same way his teacher encouraged him. Many year long references to never give up can be made after reading this book.

I really enjoyed this short children's book. I like the premise, the illustrations are fun, the only downside is that I wish the kindle version would allow you to do a "pinch to zoom" feature or something. There are times, especially on a smaller device, where it would be nice to zoom into some of the illustrations to get a better look. But as far as the book itself, I think it's wonderful!

I chose a five star rating because I love simple, picture books that have profound messages. Additionally, I love books that can easily be used for cross curricular teaching. Librarians, ELAR teachers and counselors could easily collaborate on projects with this book. Early readers can also independently read this book. I would recommend this book to students parents, and teachers.

I was happily awaiting its arrival to read to my littles in Art the 1st day of school. This is a GREAT book I've checked out from the library, however, I remembered it being a larger standard size and this one is small @ 8x9. I will return and look for a larger format if there is one as the book illustrations are difficult for students to see from a distance.

My 6yo daughter bought this book in her fire tablet because she loves this book after being read at school. I just read it for their bedtime and understand why. This book not only will help to explain the creativity concept but to highlight that being an artist is not necessarily being a talented drawer!!!
