Reid spent a large part of his retirement at the farm he and his wife owned at Wakefield, Quebec. From 1973 to 1989 he published seven books, all rooted in his personal experience while dealing with subjects of evident public interest.

When the Suez and Hungarian crises broke out in 1956 Escott Reid had been for four years the Canadian High Commissioner to India. The book complements existing studies on the Hungarian Revolution, the Suez affair, and the foreign policies of India and Canada. He was one of the senior diplomats in New Delhi and was on good terms with Prime Minister Nehru and the senior officers of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. This book is based on his writings at the time and some hitherto unpublished documents. The epilogue, written in November 1956, is an especially distinguished piece of political reporting and analysis.
