In the wake of America's Civil War, hundreds of thousands of men who fought for the Confederacy trudged back to their homes in the Southland. Some - due to lingering effects from war wounds, other disabilities, or the horrors of combat - were unable to care for themselves. Homeless, disabled, and destitute veterans began appearing on the sidewalks of southern cities and towns.

Delbrück scattering, the deflection of high-energy photons in the Coulomb field of nuclei as a consequence of vacuum polarization was observed in 1975. The related process of the scattering of light by light, also a consequence of vacuum polarization, was not observed until 1998. In both cases, it is a process described by quantum electrodynamics.

This is one that caught me by surprise. A friend of mine at work recommended that I get a copy for my Dad as a gift. I did, and instead, kept it for myself. This is one of the more intriguing, fascinating books that I've read in a long time and I DO plan to buy another for my father. I promise.

Julian Williams has written a sensitive and loving account about an extended family who endeavored to improve their lives, and perhaps escape the impending war between the North and South, by uprooting themselves from their many generations in Virginia to make a new start in the promise of the Texas frontier.
This writer is gifted in his ability to portray the many characters in this book and how their life circumstances affected them. The family faced many hardships and I wept when I read his descriptions of the tragedies that befell them. But, I also felt the hope in their strength and love, and in their courage to go on.
Because this is a true story and because the characters in this book lived, those scattered after them have lived and endured. Because we are all scatterlings this book is a must read.

This book really captures the sweat, sounds and smells of life in the nineteenth century. It is so much more than the story of three families. It's a wonderful lesson on how people lived at the time and why they made the choices they made. I recommend it to anyone interested in Texas history or family history.
