Thomas Hodgkin was also a pioneer in preventive medicine. His lecture On the means of promoting and preserving health was published in book form in 1841. It contains four parts; in the first he discusses air, light, cleanliness, clothes and breathing, in the second the important of both solid and liquid food When Lady Montefiore the wife of his friend and benefactor died in 1862, Hodgkin promised her to travel with her husband.

His major contribution to the teaching of pathology, however, was made in 1829, with his two volumed work entitled The Morbid Anatomy of Serous and Mucous Membranes, which became a classic in modern pathology. Hodgkin was one of the earliest defenders of preventive medicine, having published On the Means of Promoting and Preserving Health in book form in 1841. Among other early observations were the first description of acute appendicitis, of the biconcave format of red blood cells and the striation of muscle fibers.

His parents were Victorian Quakers, members of "The Society of Friends" and living strictly to the rules of their sect. It contains four parts; in the first he discusses air, light, cleanliness, clothes and breathing, in the second the important of both solid and liquid food.
