Rob Price is a first class certified personal trainer and a former fitness consultant at the University of Wisconsin. But since I was very unfamiliar with the sport I decided to try this book to assist in building a proper program.

Rob Price is a first class certified personal trainer and a former fitness consultant at the University of Wisconsin. He is a national weight lifting champion and state bench press record holder who has been featured in newspapers and magazines all over the world, including the USA Today and Muscle & Performance magazine, for his sports-training expertise. Basically what is presented is a generic strength training program, it is not specific to field hockey in any way, theres not even rotation movements to mimic stick work. This has been argued about weight training for every sport since weights began, and is universally over-parroted. The idea is often that you'll become "musclebound" and therefore lose flexibility.

This book only offers a general training guidance in general for all sports. If you need a specific sport you need to purchase the specific book related to the sport you need. I will not recommend it to a person that needs specificity training for a related sport.

I feel it could benefit some but personally not myself. Real basic stuff with much a beginner would learn. Not bad information

This book is nothing special in my opinion. I bought it expecting a discussion of how weight training can benefit gymnastics training. Unfortunately all I got was a general discussion of how to lift weights. There was little on programming, a decent discussion on periodization, and a good discussion of general lifting exercises...but why do you need general lifting exercises? There's nothing special here. It gives a decent, but not great, overview of how to lift for general conditioning and strength training. Basic questions such as:
How to incorporate weight training with gymnastic training
What lifts will help you power through sticking points in which gymnastic techniques
No discussion of appropriate volume.

One of the biggest problems this book has is it recommends a complete weightlifting regimen. You don't need that if you're training for gymnastics already. You get a lot of strength and explosive work through normal training. Adding a compelte lifting routine on top of that is a sure route to over-training.

I give this three stars because it is a good introductory weight lifting text. It just has nothing special for gymnasts.

Ordered this on my Kindle. Easy download of course. I think this book is good for the entry level weight training athlete, but not for someone with a few years behind them. I was looking for a way to polish my delt/shoulder sets, and didn't find it.
