This classic is one of the few diet books which actually works and which then helps one keep the weight off. There is no call for eye of newt or wing of bat, nor are there any requirements for weighings or point counting. The approach is straight-forward -- and it works.
It is very important to read and understand the first 55 pages, which tell you how and why the diet works. The basic diet is not all that appealing, but the International Diet (Chapter 11, pages 110-131) and the Gourmet Diet (Chapter 8, pages 61-78) are excellent. The recipes are delicious, easy to make, and leave you feeling full. I have served many of these dishes to company without ever advertising them (or excusing them!) as "diet food." Chapters 12 and 13 (pages 132-156) provide information on how to keep your weight down. This is particularly useful when you have to attend some function or go out to eat and cannot make a Scarsdale meal.
Medical cautions are listed starting on page 182.
A handy weight chart can be found on page 13. While some might think these goals overly restrictive, in fact they are easily achievable, and are healthier than some of the less strict goals. As the author explains, the goals are based upon insurance company actuarial tables, and so are empirically rather than theoretically derived.

This is still the best, most effective and satisfying way to lose weight that I have found in 35 years. It has your daily meals laid out, exactly what you are supposed to eat each day, and if you follow it exactly you will lose between 16-20 lbs in 2 weeks. Then there is the two week maintenance plan, then back to the two week diet, until you get to your goal weight. You eat a ton of food, are never hungry, and after you are at your goal weight you have learned how to eat to stay trim. It is the original low carb eating plan, and worked for me, and everyone I ever recommended it to. My husband lost 60 lbs in 3 months, and his cholesterol went from 290 to 150. his HDL and LDL numbers went from horrible, to perfect. The doctor was amazed. It has been 10 years and he has maintained the weight loss, and still eats a form of the maintenance plan that he enjoys.

I have had my original copy of the Scarsdale Diet book since 1980. It's yellow, beat up and taped together, but I still treasure it. My boyfriend are going to a beach resort the end of September, so I decided we were both going on the ONLY diet that has ever worked for me and dug out my old dilapidated book. In the first two weeks he lost 17 pounds and I lost 8. The first 3 days on the program, Mon- Wed, are the toughest, but stick to it, because Thursday's lunch will seem like a feast. We are now both on Keep Trim eating for our second week and getting ready to go back on the Medical Diet on Monday, for two more weeks. I need to lose another 5 - 7 and he wants to lose another 10-12....it will happen! My boyfriend has now become a "Scarsdale Spokesperson" to a couple of his chubby beer drinking buddies. So now getting to my book order. I ordered a new (used) copy from this seller, it arrived very quickly and in nearly new condition, could not be more pleased!

This is an older book -- and I know what some will say but I really like this diet plan because the menus are very simple and made up of very ordinary food that you could buy at any grocery store. Plus, it really does work! It is more of a low-calorie plan than a low-carb one, I would say. (There is a lot of misinformation out there about it including "copies" of the plan on diet websites that aren't accurate.) I would definitely recommend reading this book for yourself and trying the diet for two weeks. (It is much more effective than Atkins -- lower in fat and less work, too.)

I have been using this diet for years and it works, I've probably tried just about every diet on the market Atkins, south beach, the zone, paleo, keto, military diet, weight watchers, cabbage soup, this is the diet that works the fastest, my mother went on this diet while I was a teenager and I watched her lose 70 lbs in 5 months, also she was feeding a lot of the recipes to me and my brother and just adding a carb on the side the lamb a la provincial I developed a love for along with the substitute lunch I would eat the sub lunch as an after school snack with a few extra pecans in it, and guess what 5 months later I was 15 lbs thinner and I wasn't dieting I was eating all kinds of stuff not on the diet, school lunch, a baked potato with butter at dinner, I wasn't fat back then but I was slightly over my ideal weight 16 years old I was 5'6 and about 145-150, ive always had a butt like jlo, but at 130-135 I looked amazing, after that whenever I need to lose weight I turn to scarsdale, in college, after having a child, after sitting on my butt for 2 years working home health care and driving all day, after a divorce, I've always had some trouble with my weight and this is the only thing that works, yes you need willpower of steal to get through the first 3 days, I've found that 2 weeks of Atkins induction helps break my carb and sugar cravings before starting scarsdale and helps curb the appetite, I also switch back to Atkins for 2 weeks when I can't take low fat any longer, I usually just maintain for 2 weeks when I do that but it gives me a break and I take a cheat day about once a month that is preplanned not on a whim don't let yourself just give in and cheat you won't go back on it plan your cheat day in advance and if you feel like you can't take it after a month or 2 switch to Atkins for 2 weeks just don't expect to lose a lot of weight in that 2 weeks, me and my family have lost hundreds of lbs on this diet over the years, it works and it works fast but you have to be in the right mindset before starting this diet or young stick to it and when you are at goal you can't completely go back to eating the way you did before or you will gain it back, that has always been my problem ill maintain for a while and then I get lazy and start avoiding the scale last time I amaintained for 2 years before starting to gain I've got to make weighing myself daily a priority even if I'm not going to like what the scale says and the 4 pound stop signal is a good tool that I need to use

This is an oldie but goody! When Dr. Tarnover was alive, it was all the rage. I lost 70 lbs. on it and still cook with his recipes and tips, use of herbs and more. Still some very good ideas for weight control/loss.
