Elena! You’ve come back to u. .Wel. o. ook, she said. I’d hoped you would be the first person here. I need t. ook, how about a cup of coffee?. Well, I hesitated en-thirty this morning precisely because I wanted an hour to get things ready for a big job we were starting today. But Elena didn’t look well. Her skin was, in the glowing light of a summer morning, the color of a beige pair of pumps, and her curly blond hair looked like she’d removed it from a paper bag and clamped it on askew. Her jeans no longer clung to her, but were all.

THEFT OF THE POET by Barbara Wilson. BARBARA WILSON is the author of several novels and a collection of short stories. In addition to the Pam Nilsen series, Murder in the Collective, Sisters of the Road, and The Dog Collar Murders, she has recently published Gaudi Afternoon, the first mystery to feature London-based translator Cassandra Reilly. Barbara Wilson is the cofounder of Seal Press in Seattle.

Even though the book was written over a decade ago it isn't dated. I enjoyed Barbara Wilson's characters and her infusion of geopolitics. Nothing felt contrived or cliche, which of course is rare for mysteries. I especially liked her sleuth Pam Nilson. The characters, dialogue and the plot all seemed logical. My only minor complaint would be with the climax, which seemed a bit of a letdown, but otherwise I can recommend this msytery. I look forward to reading other books in this series and also her other mystery series.

It kept me up until late in to the nite into the wee hours of the morning. Twists and turns kept it interesting enough to stay with it. It also helped me to keep an open mind about gender preferences and how ideas change.

What a screwed up group of characters. Don't expect a true murder mystery, it's more of a story about one person trying to figure herself out and playing detective.

The book has complicated. Too many suspects. The relationships in the book are shallow. Uninteresting book.

I enjoy reading fiction in which I find at least one character to relate to, or at least like. Unfortunately, none of those who people these pages elicit any sympathy, or even interest, from me. I have not yet finished the book, picking it up again only when I am without other reading material (including cereal boxes or product warning labels) and may never find out who murdered the perhaps fortunate victim. At least he did not have to endure these dull characters all the way through the book.

It was overall an interesting read. I thought the characters were known to me through the writing style. I would recommend this book.

Good plot but too messy and far too many people not clearly linked to support reader interest/attention

Took me a while to get into it. A lot of characters, not fully fleshed out. I haven't finished it yet.
