Michael Perrin is back home, living with his parents and continuing his training. Arno Waltiri has left his estate and the disposition of his papers and recordings to Michael. Greg Bear weaves throughout this story a fascinating new mythos about the creation and evolution, de-evolution and re-evolution of man and the universe that I found to be quite astonishing in its depth and breadth. He weaves in references to several world religions and ties them in to his mythos, showing how the original truth was "twisted" over the years to conform to what would best serve those in power.

Highway patrol and LAPD officers stood with arms folded, talking with each other. They paid him little attention.

The recipient of two Hugos and four Nebulas for his fiction, he has been called the best working writer of hard science fiction by The Science Fiction Encyclopedia. Many of his novels, such as Darwin’s Radio, are considered to be this generations’ classics.

I am a huge Greg Bear fan. His ideas are revolutionary and his storytelling is compelling and evocative. Sometimes his endings are a little ambiguous but then things rarely tie up neatly in the real world. Anyway this story is actually one of his more traditional stories and perhaps that's why it does have a fairly neatly tied up ending. Still he brings his own originality and complexity to the story making it well worth your time.

You'll have to read the first book to fully grasp the story of The Sepent Mage. The ISO Mage character role is more involved in this episode from Greg Bear. Mr. Bear is a genius in my opinion. There are times during this story that one can't help but contemplate their own Human potential.

The first book is very descriptive and a little verbose. However, once you enter book 2 the information is pertinent and gives color and meaning to the final composition. I enjoyed the characters but lived the created creatures. Enjoyed

The promise of Bear’s first novel in this series bears fruit (sorry, not sorry????). This second book is a joy. It’s been years since I stayed awake until 3:45 to finish a book. Totally worth it. Highly recommend.

Such a beautiful story, filled with songs of innocence and experience. It owes much to many but stands firmly on its own. A true gem.

Great book
I read this as a child, so I admit I'm bias. Still this is a great fantasy novel that's let's your imagination run. It's not what people expect and a fun book that I've often leant to others who have found similar delight in its pages. Give it a try...
