I have read and re-read this book so many times and still love it best of all. I'm from Vermont and during my most obsessive phase of this book, I discovered it was based in a real event in Vermont, and that only increased my love for this story. Yes, the first chapter is a bit odd and disturbing. But if you are capable to reading into how certain things in life can play out later or explain some things, you can get past that. It's hard not to read the book, compare the generations and seek out the connections and ones destiny. I guarantee, when you reach the last page, you will flip to the front and feel the need to re-read...lose yourself and if interested, do some research to check out the real case. Yes, this really happened and the author has done justice to fill in the blanks of a hard to find case in Vermont. This particular purchase was for a friend as I am hoping she will love it as much as I have.

Since I read it, this has become the book I have recommended to every woman I meet. The title struck me as odd when I first heard it, but it was recommended to me by someone whose literary judgment I trust implicitly so I gave it a try and I was SO pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. I don't know why more people don't know about this book, I want to buy 50 copies of it and give it out to everyone I know just to get more people to read it.

If you gravitate toward books like East of Eden, McTeague, or anything by Faulkner -- characters who continue to make the wrong choices and systematically f' up their lives -- you will LOVE this book. It really is a treasure.

I started reading Susan's books over twenty years ago. This was my first introduction to her writing style. She writes like a poet. Clearly, succinctly, with true heart. Susan is one of my all time favorite writers. The relationships of which she writes in her books are so true to form you know she has had personal experience at that level.

Detailed and beautifully written. Images and thoughts jump off the page. It's a book I can reread over and over and feel I have never read the same book twice.
