At first if you've been scrapbooking awhile and reading articles, watching demos, and books on scrapbooking, the style used in this book can be a little jarring, but only because it looks and feels counter-intuitive to the more experienced lot of us.

I've been scrapbooking awhile and I don't like doing the impersonal digital layouts that use up my printer's ink and drain my pockets. I'm tired of the perfect rectangles of cardstock over cardstock with the little A.C. Moore flower adhered to the corner. That's for a more traditional scrapbooker or for someone who is short on time and just wants to get their memories down more creatively than just sliding photos in an album.

This book is for the rest of us. What to expect? There are clear simple instructions on how to use watercolor on plastic Yupo paper - paper that doesn't absorb paint but allows paints to sit on the surface allowing for more vibrant color. Imagine your photos on a backdrop like that. Use masking tape as a background and paint over it. How about cutting petals off of the plastic flowers you get from the craft stores and or dollar store? Then glue the petals to cardstock and paint them with tacky glue and gesso for a crackle effect on flowers besides your child's photo? Cut a letter out of fabric and sew it onto felt. Use goldleaf on cardstock shaped like a crown as a backdrop for your princess.

Those of us who love to sew original creations, those of us who like to paint, those of us who have sloppy handwriting and love our handwriting anyway, those of us who have to organize and micro-manage the events of our lives and just want a way to relieve stress creatively - this is for you. Also, anyone who is a former art student would appreciate this book. But you don't have to be a professional artist to attempt these layouts, they are simple enough for an elementary school student to attempt and with a few exceptions, most of the supplies can be found in your home.

This book is definitely not for everyone but the library and the craft stores are saturated with plenty of books for more mainstream cleaner, traditional styles of scrapbooking.

The only thing reason I didn't give the book a perfect rating is because photos do fade, they do yellow, they do turn orange in part because of acid. That's real - many of us have seen this happen. Some of the mediums suggested in this book are not acid-free. I'd suggest always adhering the photo - using any acid-free adherent - to acid-free cardstock or patterned paper as a buffer between the paint, tape, plastic and other mediums suggested in this book. If you choose to write over the photo, use an acid-free writing utensil.

Finally there's a scrapbooking book for people who prefer acrylic craft paints to the Making Memories stuff. I can understand that this might not be up the alley of most traditional scrappers and that's fine, there are dozens of books out there to fill that niche. This is something more free spirited and messy. And that's exactly why I like it so much.

If you enjoy the kind of art you see in the Somerset line of magazines, you will probably like what you find in Scraptastic. There is plenty of eye candy, but the best part is that every single layout comes with a photo tutorial showing you exactly how to do the technique. I've bought a lot of mixed media books and never had one that was so full of instruction.

I love to play with new art supplies, and this book offers some actual project ideas that you can use to try out some of these new tools. I never find more than basic instructions on the packages, this book fills the gaps before or after I've gone shopping at the craft store.

It also offers basic instructions and info in using some items you may already have around in ways you might not think of. I've found it very useful for art journaling and love what I've learned. The instruction on stamping and using transparencies alone were worth it for me. If I can upload a picture of my result on the main page, I will! That one result makes the entire book worth the investment for me, but I've used quite a bit in it. A reference for use with those unique art supplies you've never tried but keep looking at on shelf. Well worth the investment.

This book is great for different ideas and ways to do things.

I'm always looking for a different funky touch to pull into my pages and make them my own and this book is full of them.

It's also nice that the book not only shows you ideas but lets you know now to execute them unlike a lot of other books.

In a world full of "traditional" scrapbooking how to's, this one is a must have for everyone who considers themselves to be outside the box.

I got this book because I rented it from the library and then I bought it because I loved it so much :) I like the projects for not only scrapbooks, but also art journals, too. If you love to art journal and/or scrapbook, then you will really love this book!

If you love to dabble in mixed media, you won't ever be the same once you have this book! The first time I opened this book, at the end of my day, it took every once of will power to force myself to close the book and wait until morning since I was getting so excited that I wanted to find a 24 hour art supply store!
Every project included is an opportunity to work with yet another medium and/or experience them newly re-mixed to create an awesome, unique, touchable art piece.
Instructions and materials lists are well done, such that I plan to hold "art gatherings" wherein the art piece can be completed within a day.
This has become my "art bible" and muse when needed to continue the journey.
