This is what you want in a collector's guide. It's got the years and types and prices for each coin going back to the early 1700s. The spiral binding is especially usefull for table top use when looking through a pile of coins. Color pics and the description and detail is amazing. It even gives a description for the grade of individual coin styles!!!!! what should a BU washington quarter look like vs a morgan dollar - its all here. If you are starting out, you'll want this one first. Blue is for pros and those who are getting more into the investment side. The red book gives just enough info to get you started and excited and feel a heck of a lot more knowledgeable with background and history, reference and premo statistics.

I have every " Official Red Book Guide" going all the way back to the first edtion. I also have just about every coin and currency book ever published, which is a sizable library. I'm an avid coin and currency collector and have been so for over 50 years. Every year I purchase both the red book and blue book on coins.
When I found out that Whittman was coming out with a more detailed book on coins I did some research and read every review I found. Since there are so many books on coins that have come out recently I was a little leary of purchasing another book since I already am up to date with the regular yearly editions that have been released to date.
When I recieved my copy and before I even opened the box, the weight of the box had me confussed.
I opened the box and was first amazed at the weight of this one coin book. Upon thumbing through the pages I can see why it was so heavy, the paper stock is of top quality along with each and every image within. This books contains so much information I can see it taking the place of many other coin books. It covers so many different topics and is so thorough that I hope it is released at least on a every two year bases. I have found myself straining to carry this heavy book around verses the normal lighter red book due to the amount of information it.
If you are looking to buy a book on everything about US Coins and their history, this is the book to have!
I'll still purchase the yearly Red and Blue Books, but only now they will be used for quick refrence.
I am now wondering how often this book will be released. But if and when it is in its second Edtion I will not be hesitant in making a purchase, it is worth every cent and then some!

This is a new product. It is the Deluxe, First Edition, of the very popular annual Redbook series. This new Deluxe version is an exhaustive reference that any collector of U S coins will enjoy. Everything about this edition has been greatly expanded. It's a massive, four inch thick, four pound reference book. Having this kind of information at your fingertips provides the numismatist with valuable data with which to make buying, selling, and coin collecting decisions. It's written in a fun style and provides the detailed history of every major United States coin series. Downside: The book is so big and heavy that it can be unwieldy to hold in your lap, Upside: It's an amazing compilation of coin collecting data. It includes lots of pictures for comparison allowing the collector to determine the grade (quality) of their collection, and provides the "back story" of how each denomination was created. Additionally, each series is placed in context of the time of its creation (ie. Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI and WWII, etc.) If you are a numismatist, you'll find this volume to be a tremendous asset. If you know a coin collector, this is a gift they will not forget.

As a hobbyist coin hunter and collector needing to find the value of coin that I come across this book is invaluable, for the beginner or an advanced collector the information in the book exceeds expectations. Easy to read and understand is why I give it a 5 star rating.

I scanned through this rather hefty book at a Barnes & Noble store recently. Having owned the annual Red Book and other coin publications over the years I found features of this one interesting. First there is much more detail about each coin. All the photos are in color. An interesting feature is that all the coin "variations" are on a single page, so you can instantly spot the differences. Grades are illustrated for the coins. A table of values, much like those on PCGS and NGC are shown instead of the old format. There are excellent comments re: "old" commemorative coins and the price trends over the past years.
The price at Amazon is significantly lower than the official price making it a relative bargain.
If I were a coin collecting beginner I would be sure to purchase this book as it brings together information that could only be obtained by buying several other books.
The only drawback is its size. It weighs in at 6.4 pounds(!) and measures 10" tall, 7" wide and 2 1/2 " deep. It is huge and certainly not something one would lug around at a coin show. I usually read in bed or at a table, so that is not an issue for me. But if you want a book that is much more transportable, you would be better off with the standard Red Book.

If you are a coin collector, you have to have this Red cover edition of A Guide Book of United States Coins (as well as the complementary Blue Book). The Blue Book has the price you can expect to pay: essential to bidding on auctions. But the Red Book has the price a coin dealer will pay you if you bring in an old coin rather than put it up for auction.
It is also an eye opener for the novice. If you think that you can walk in and sell a coin you just bought for what you paid, you will be disappointed. The Blue Book tells you what you may have to pay. But the Red Book has the price you will probably get if you decide to sell collected coins.
So buy the correct book. Selling? Buy the Red Cover book. (Buying? Buy the Blue cover book).
