Most importantly, O'Connell knows how to tell a story. In the end, the book is definitely entertaining and if you're looking for a quick, fun read, then I'd definitely recommend this book. Like the best personal essayists, possesses the rare talent of making the most obscure personal event relatable to any reader, and he writes like he talks. Why do I say it's quite privileged and white? Although Ryan suffers from single parent upbringing. He is very white and quite Californian.

We lie more to strangers than we lie to coworkers. Now let's say you're having that exact same conversation with someone deceptive. They will take barrier objects and put them between themselves and the person that is interviewing them. Extroverts lie more than introverts. Men lie eight times more about themselves than they do other people. That person may be withdrawn, look down, lower their voice, pause, be kind of herky-jerky. Ask a deceptive person to tell their story, they're going to pepper it with way too much detail in all kinds of irrelevant places. They'll alter their vocal tone, often making their vocal tone much lower.

We all know what it’s like to justify something we’re about to do with a clever excuse. Temptation knocks at every door. No one is immune. But often we put ourselves in places of vulnerability and then wonder why we get tempted. So, wherein lies the problem? With the lies we tell ourselves and our resulting behavior. In this engaging book, Greg Laurie takes an honest and humorous look at the ways we fall into sin and how we frequently rationalize our actions. Drawing from the pages of Scripture and his own experiences, he shares practical steps we can take to effectively resist temptation and put an end to the compromises that will ultimately lead to our downfall.

The Sphinx of Driz
Lies We Tell Ourselves ( by Greg Laurie) is awesome book that really cuts you deep but helps you to heal and become a better man or woman. When I first picked up the book, I though it was going to be about food. The cover shows a picture of a delicious piece of ice cream cake dripping with fudge, almonds and a couple cherries but after getting into the book I realized that this book is more than just a book about food. It's about the lies we tell ourselves when we are tempted. No just tempted with food but also with sexual addictions, alcoholism, drugs, cursing, gluttony, etc.

Greg Laurie, the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California explains that we, even as Christians lie and are tempted to do things that we know are not right (imagine that ... Gasp). We make up excuses in our mind make it alright but in reality it's not and that's just one of the tricks of the enemy.

This book really opened my eyes up a lot to temptation and how we are tempted. Pastor Greg really explains not only the tactics of the enemy but also how to overcome the enemy by the example of Jesus Christ.

The book is awesome in the fact that it's a simple read but yet it goes into a lot of detail. Pastor Greg goes through the three noted temptations of Jesus in detail and explains the significance of each temptation. One personal thing I found out is that while the Bible only goes into detail about those three (3) temptations of Jesus, we can assume He was tempted more than that based on Luke 4:13Open Link in New Window (msg) which reads "That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity." This to me says, the devil was defeated but wasn't giving up. He was just going to stay in the bushes and wait for another opportunity. This blew my mind away.

Bottomline - temptation will always be there waiting ... it's what you do when you are faced with it that matters.

Like I said, this book is a very simple read. Someone who normally doesn't read can finish this book in an hour or less and be blessed beyond measure. Pastor Greg has a great way of getting the point across and helping you learn and grow from what He has said.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Even Pastors ... it's a small 120 page book that will change the way you see things forever!

Laurie provides us with a realistic look at the place of temptation in our lives. He uses the Bible to explain why we are tempted and how to overcome temptation in the same way Jesus did. He encourages the Believer to hid the Word in our hearts so that when temptation comes and it surely will we will be prepared to overcome it. Know that if you are moving closer to God Satan will be right there trying to distract you.

Lies We Tell Ourselves; How to say no to temptation and put an end to compromise is a very good book by Greg Laurie. It is Bible based and well written. I am only about half through it and it's already helping me to get back on track with my eating habits by reminding me where temptation originated and what a loving and patient God I serve and my desire to please Him in every area of my life. The simplicity, humor and common sense Bible truth in this book would, I believe, help everyone make better choices and resist temptation no matter what area they want to change.

This book hits the issue of tempation and how we as humans should handle it head on. Pulls no punches, which is what we need to hear. Every opinion by the author is based on Bible teachings.

Not done reading this yet, but so far it is ok. I started out with the lies I tell myself about eating, but it has turned out to be much more than that.
