The Story of the Nativity. Many years ago in the town of Nazareth lived a young woman called Mary. She was a simple good-hearted lady. The angel told Joseph the news and asked him to look after Mary and the special baby. Joseph was a carpenter and he made lots of wooden toys for the baby. Mary sewed swaddling clothes and blankets for the baby.

The legends surrounding Ernest Hemingway can be as interesting as the plots of his novels

The legends surrounding Ernest Hemingway can be as interesting as the plots of his novels. The author was famous for his personal life, but some of Papa’s adventures verge into apocrypha. This particular story was believed to be written on a napkin in Luchow’s restaurant in Manhattan, while another version of the story claims that it was composed in the Algonquin Hotel, where a circle of New York intellectuals (known as the Algonquin Round Table) enjoyed discussions–and drinking–during lunch time. This is only the first of the discrepancies that surround this legend, for no one can say with certainty where it happened, or when, and witnesses are elusive.

Flower is a formidable woman who, along with her husband Mordecai, runs the most respected inn in all of Judea. She loves her husband, friends, all children and babies. But she has problems; the angels Gabriel and Michael are visiting her, thieves are plotting her murder, Romans are invading her beloved Bethlehem, she has the reputation of being the strongest 'man' in the city, and with the census in full swing, traffic is gridlocked and parking is difficult at the market. Flower, a Story of the Nativity, is not the typical Nativity Story. It is a gritty, exciting, and realistic adventure story. While some of the characters are fictitious the people and events are patterned as realistically as possible after what we know of the circumstances. With that in mind, this book is true to the Biblical accounts. Additionally, it addresses many questions; Who were the Wise Men, Where were they from and what became of them? What was the Star of Bethlehem? How did Gabriel and Michael interact with people? Why was there a census? Why did God allow the innocents to be murdered? Why are the genealogies in Matthew and Luke different? Why does Luke say Jesus was taken to Nazareth after his birth but Matthew says he fled to Egypt, and many more.

This telling of the Christmas narrative is from the perspective of the inn keeper. I love the historic and culturial background provided as well as explainations for seemingly contradictive info in the gospels. I've read Flower for 2 Christmases in a row and, I believe, it will continue to be part of my Christmas tradition for years to come. I'm really looking forward to the release of "Mordecai, An Easter Story"!

This story gives historical background to many cultural practices of the time and helps give perspective to the events that take place in the story. I was looking for a spiritual story to enhance the Christmas season and I believe I found it.

Here is a unique but spiritual presentation of Jesus's birth.
This book is a "flower" in itself; growing, blossoming and then bursting to full bloom with the miraculous event of our Lord's birth in the stable.
Along the way, before and after the birth, we meet all of the familiar characters we've known forever. We walk with them at ground level, experiencing their cold, exhaustion, pain and terror.
This book should not be reserved for the Christmas season. Read it anytime!
And kudos to the author for the research required for this story.

Still In Mind
This book was written in a very amateurish manner. For example, the author created characters, then never followed through to the end of the book with them. It was a painful read, and if it hadn't been an assigned book for the book club to which I belong, I would not have finished it. I hope the author doesn't give up his day job!

This book is fast paced, emotion evoking, and insightfull. It depicts the spiritual warfare between angels, demons, and the humans caught in between in a Biblical time period. Think of it as This Present Darkness set around Jesus's birth. I strongly reccomend reading this book. It's amazing!
