I found "Becoming an Extraordinary Manager" at our public library, and about halfway through reading it I knew I had to order my own copy. I came to Amazon, and was shocked that this book had been reviewed by only one person. If this book is not one of the best-selling management books of all time, it certainly should be! Sandler's book is excellent and should be required reading for anyone in a management position. The first sentence of the introduction sums up Sandler's philosophy of management: "Extraordinary managers make the whole greater than the sum of its parts." He then gives the reader 256 pages of brilliantly helpful ideas of how to interact with staff to bring out the best in each of them. I'll mention a few things that stood out for me. Sandler includes an excellent list of questions for a new manager to use in his first one-on-one meeting with each staff person. He talks a lot about the importance of motivating employees, but not as something a manager DOES TO the employee so much as something the manager helps DEVELOP WITHIN the employee. His chapters about motivation include a good overview of several contemporary motivational theories, and survey results conveying which factors are actually critical to employee satisfaction. Another memorable quote: "Employees join companies but they leave managers." He says that unfortunately, managers often "take good, decent people and turn them into cynical, bitter employees." He likens the role of a manger to that of an athletic coach, patiently but demandingly helping the athlete/employee reach the goal, but never running onto the field and taking over the role of athlete. He also critically examines current ways of conducting "performance reviews," stating that they often "don't help the boss-employee relationship. They hurt it. They do not improve employee morale. They decrease it. Performance reviews have probably done more harm to employee morale than any invention since the layoff." He then offers a great deal of information for making this process a collaborative one that is done WITH the employee rather than TO the employee, to accomplish the real purpose of improving employee performance. From interviewing to hiring to retaining great talent to developing potential in all staff, Len Sandler's book contains page after page of helpful insights, ideas, and examples. I heartily recommend it!

I was a software developer for 15 years before managing my first team. The last thing I want is to read about "synergy". It just brings back all the pain inflicted by so-so managers I've had in the past. I would really like to be someone my employees appreciate, respect and most importantly trust. Words I wish management spent more time trying to understand, and less time trying to "leverage."

I received this book as a part of a one day class on managing remote teams (this book focuses on general management practices). It is direct and insightful and exactly what I needed as a novice manager to get my feet on solid ground. I was paticularly happy with Len's approach to performance management, and having now applied a strategy where performance is evaluated throughout the year, and where the final review is done in partnership and scored in agreement rather than me placing arbitray numeric values on things like "integrity" that simply aren't measured that way. I've been doing this for 2 years now and it works incredibly well - it is a long term approach that creates a vital trust between me and my employees.

Len Sandler is clear, concise and direct. He is in every way what a good manager should be, and reading his book will help you - unless you are looking for fun new phrases to drop in your next managers luncheon.
