This is a very human and comprehensive account of everything that has happened in the world of beer for the last 50 years or so. It explains what happened to the companies and brands you used to see but don't any more. It explains how breweries and brew-pubs and mega-companies work, and how they have evolved the way they have, and why. It explains why beers your used to love have changed their flavor. This is a fantastic book for anyone who enjoys beers and is curious about such things. Just a really, really fine read! Written by someone who knows his stuff! The author is highly qualified!

On the issue of religion Bamforth is a pluralist Episcopalian who dabbles in Buddhism. Perhaps the strangest argument in the book comes in the conclusion where he makes an argument for toleration of beer from an argument for freedom of religion. The writing here was nearly as good as that on brewing, but the content was not.

Most simple put Bamforth's text was interesting, enlightening and enjoyable.

There isn't a ton of technical information for the homebrewer, but there is a very rich history of beer and the modern commercial brewing industry. It seems like Charlie has been around nearly all facets of the big brewer industry and has a wealth of knowledge and information to share.

The only downside of the book were the length of the end notes. Some of them were several pages long and almost could have been integrated into the chapters they belonged to. Several of the longer ones would take me out of the story long enough that I would have to go back and reread several paragraphs to get back into the story. The end notes definitely have substance and information, and should be read, but they were used a little too liberally.

I picked this up for free a while ago and finally got around to reading it. It was lovely. He talks about the brewing process in such a way that someone technically inclined can read without getting bored, and a novice can read without getting lost. This isn't a book on brewing, so much as a party autobiographical history of beer, with a smattering of anecdotes and personal beliefs.

He does talk about God, and religion, but only in passing, and in a vague spiritual way that didn't bother this atheist reader.

Read this book. Drink a beer. Enjoy them both together.

This isn't a book on brewing, so much as a party autobiographical history of beer, with a smattering of anecdotes and personal beliefs.

He does talk about God, and religion, but only in passing, and in a vague spiritual way that didn't bother this atheist reader.

I had to set the book down for a few days after reading the first chapter. Being reminded of the current climate in the brewing industry required that I reach for that which keeps me professionally passionate and motivated.....a healthy and delicious glass of beer. Acquisition and consolidation are initially described which inevitably mean fewer jobs and the possibility of squeezing some talented and passionate brewers out of the industry as the Professor points out. However, just as it would seem all is lost, Dr. Bamforth reminds and informs us of the new culture of beer and brewing ushered in by craft brewing pioneers such as Ken Grossman, Fritz Maytag and Jim Koch. Charlie defines many of the principle quality attributes of beer for the reader which further aid to justify its rightful place on the highest of beverage pedestals. The book takes a turn to describe many of the challenges the beer industry has faced and is currently facing with dealing with anti-alcohol forces as it also addresses the stigma associated with extreme beer and drinking events such as the great Oktoberfest celebration in Munich. Bamforth enlightens the reader as to the numerous health benefits associated with the moderate consumption of beer. In closing, the author speaks of tolerance, tolerance of people, people of one another, people's choices. The reader must indulge in the footnotes. They offer insight into the mind of the author. More importantly, and perhaps as a first in a Bamforth writing, they offer insight into the heart of the author. At times, the book reads as if it is the final chapter in the career of a brewing scholar, researcher and teacher........let us hope this is not the case. Regardless of one's level of intimacy with beer and/or the brewing process as a home brewer, professional brewer or beer enthusiast, "Beer Is Proof God Loves Us: Reaching for the Soul of Beer and Brewing" deserves a place on the library shelf.
