The use of nuclear power is an issue that few can approach with impartiality. Mounfield attempts to do so. In his introduction he states that he is neither an advocate nor a critic of its use, and his purpose is to present a textbook analysis of current practices and procedures world wide. His inquiry begins with the "front-end" of the fuel cycle, covering all aspects from the mining of uranium ore to the delivery of manufactured fuel to reactor sites. He next considers the "in-reactor" phase the use of nuclear fuel to produce heat, the storage of fresh fuel at reactor sites, and the short term storage of spent fuel. Finally, he considers the "back-end" of the fuel cycle the transport of spent fuel, its reprocessing, and its final disposal. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
