In a recently published book, ''Academics in Court: The Consequences of Faculty Discrimination Litigation,'' the authors, George R. LaNoue and Barbara A. Lee, concluded that faculty members who bring discrimination lawsuits in Federal courts have only one chance in five of prevailing. And students who bring suits, according to various experts, fare even worse. According to Professors LaNoue and Lee, the Federal courts decided only one case of discrimination against a faculty member in the 1960's. But they decided 145 in the 1970's and have been averaging 34 per year in the 1980's.
