Shura's writing is as unembellished and authentic as her characters. The fears, dreams and courage of early American settlers are thoroughly explored and convincingly expressed.

I'd ordered this book through the Scholastic Book Club when I was in the 6th grade, and loved it! A few years ago I ordered it through Amazon.com for my daughter to enjoy when she's older, but right now I'm enjoying it just as much as I did 21 years ago!
WARNING, HERE BE SPOILERS!!!!!!
I was left wanting to know more about what happened to Tildy's mother, wanting to know more about Granny Annie, and, being the hopeless romantic that I am, would love it if there had been a sequel to the book. Even a prequel, to tell of Tildy's life in Kentucky.
Now, there IS one goof in the book. At one point the shy, quiet brother, Sam, went to help out, but Shura slipped up and implied (twice) that the outgoing, friendly brother, Simon, was the one who had witnessed an argument between Kate's parents. Despite that little error, the book is hard to put down, even for a 32 year old!

I've always been astonished by the lack of attention given to this set of books. I grew up hooked to the so-called "medaled" list of children's literature (ie Newbery award, Caldecott medal, ALA notable books) and "Kate's Book" is infinitely more medal-worthy than some better-known authors' works that have received loads of critical praise. The story is fast-paced and entertaining enough to keep a child involved, the moral aspect strong, the details vivid and educational. For once critics should pay attention to what children read and want, not what they think children should be reading. It's a shame this book is out of print -- I would recommend it to any child, or even adult.

This is absolutely the best book I've ever read. I don't agree with the other reviewer. I picked this up at a second-hand bookshop, and was totaly blown away. I got it when I was 11, I'm nearly 13 now, and I can't remember how many times I've read it. If my house was burning, it would be one of the items I grabbed, that and it's sequel, which, by the way, I searched for for 6 months. I Luvluvluvluvluvluvluvluvluved this book!!! Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been searching for this book for ages! I read it in my childhood over and over again... despite it's watermarks and creased pages. The story is delightful and I can't wait to purchase the book and read it again!

Maybe it's because most of the books I read in class when I was in school were about boys (think My Brother Sam is Dead, Hatchet, The Giver), but I really relished reading stories featuring female main characters whenever I had the chance. This is an old favorite that I recently re-discovered when setting aside books for my kid sister.
I love Kate's Book, it is an easy to read story about a girl whose family takes off for the Oregon territory. It's written from her point of view, and as such seems very relatable for her intended audience. I know it certainly captured my imagination at eleven, wondering what it was like to head off into a wilderness in a covered wagon, with both the thrill and danger of it.
I would recommend it to anyone in the 8-12 range, along with other favorites like The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, and Out of the Dust.

This was one of my favorite books growing up. I'm now purchasing it for my daughter. I was, as are other readers, surprised that it has so little recognition. The story is pretty much what you would expect from a "Wagon's Ho!" children literature book, but it's fast paced enough to keep the undevided attention of the target audience. Good morals, strength, hard work, sacrifice, courage, its all here.

Great book. Too bad it was missing its covers.

I read Kate's Book as a child and never forgot it. I think it didn't receive recognition because the author also wrote Sunfire romances. I read jeuvenile fiction intensively in the eighties and nineties and this was, if not the best "pioneer girl" book, the best "wagon train" book. Great characterizations, great historical detail, emotionally gripping, not a Sunfire romance.
