Nancy Rue. She imagined. I can’t be Antoinette AND be an archaeologist, she thought. But I can be LIKE Antoinette and Captain John Smith: I will be a pioneer for all that has more good than evil. ed some more until she came up with the perfect name: Dr. Demetria Diggerty. Of course, Sophie knew she would have to give Dr. Diggerty more than just a name, and to do that she needed quiet time in her room. So it really didn’t bother her that almost as soon as they got back to the house late that afternoon, she heard Aunt Bailey and Lacie go off to the movies without inviting her. Sophie has a wild imagination. Whether she is planning an archaeological dig in her back yard, or trying to determine if she was adopted, Sophie often lets her thoughts get the best of her, and lands herself in a lot of hot water. So, what will happen when she learns the truth about a family secret?

This is the second book in a series of Christian middle grades literature about a girl who can sometimes have difficulties dealing with reality. While I have not read the first book, I did find this book really engaging. Sophie is a likeable character, one to whom I think many middle grades girls will relate. Her struggles are not all that different from the ones we all had as kids.

I liked that Sophie was an imperfect child, that she struggled with obedience, social interactions, and most of all her faith. I think lots of girls in the target reading audience have similar difficulties, and it will be useful to watch how a literary character handles them. I think the girls who read this book will see parts of Sophie in themselves. This is the exact kind of book my niece (who is in 5th grade) would love.

All in all, I think this is a great book (and series) for middle grades readers. It will probably appeal to girls more than boys.

Nancy Rue is one of my favorite Christian authors of books for young girls and this one doesn't disappoint.

Sophie and her friends undertake the task of going through her grandmother's chest of items from long ago. One of her friends suggests something that has Sophie obsessed with discovering the truth. She moves in and out of her "God-space" during anxious moments while trying to trust Him.

Nancy Rue's books have authentic characters and deal with real life situations and real life responses to those situations.

so I started reading this book and discovered it was for kids. Okay. I almost stopped but for some reason I continued. By the end I was smiling and wished that my now high school aged granddaughters had read these books. They would rebel reading a book 'too young' for themselves but I will still recommend it to them.
I hope other girls learn of these books and can get a closer walk with the Lord though them.

I enjoyed the first book of this series a lot, and was excited to read the second one. However, I think this book isn't as good as the first. Sophie still has problems, and is trying to work her way through that tough age between childhood and adulthood. Her father still doesn't understand her. It is their relationship that interests me the most in Nancy Rue's books about Sophie. And we, the readers, finally find out the reason why her father is so hard on her.

It may be because I'm so far past the age group this book is aimed at, but I felt the answer was too easy. That relationships between father and daughter can be complicated just because they are two different people. I didn't need a cause as much as a resolution to try to understand each other.

I would still recommend this book. Nancy Rue creates great characters and gives them real problems.

I purchased this book for my ten year old daughter. She has others from the series & enjoyed them enough to get more. We were happy with this purchase.
