Filmmaker Arne Johnson and writer/teacher Karen Macklin’s new book Indie Girl encourages young women to forget about following the latest trends and get busy creating them. That’s easier said than done of course, but Johnson and Macklin know a thing or two about independent media and have drafted a confident and inspiring work that just may accomplish what it has set out to do. From starting a zine to forming a band, this book introduces girls to independent media and encourages them to one-up this season’s lame-ass styles and reinvent youth culture for themselves

Cute book, nice concept. Didn't knock my daughter's socks off, but there's some good inspiration in there.

Girls unite! No longer stand aside while others dictate what you should like or watch. Right from the first page, INDIE GIRL, reinforces the idea to take charge and not settle for anything less.

This upbeat book gives information on how to start a band, publish a zine, put on a play, film a TV show, do an art exhibit, form a dance troupe, launch a fashion company, put together a poetry slam, and even organize a parade. There's also ideas on materials, resources, how to organize and get started with insider tips and tricks of the trade. Throughout this field guide are teen and expert quotes loaded with advice.

The pages are bright and fun without overloading on info. I really liked this book. I especially loved the message of self-empowerment. Don't be afraid to take charge of your dreams! Girls who work together can bring creative charge.

Watch out naysayers! Independent girls are on their way!

I absolutely loved Indie Girl! This book has everything to teach you how to sate your desires! I've always really been into fashion, and wanted to start my own business - but I had no idea where to start, who to recruit, where to buy stuff, and how to keep our money. I wanted to be independent and didn't want my mothers or fathers help, so with Indie Girl - it really taught me how to make my dream a possibility! With their advice, I have finally been able to design some clothes with a few great friends, and I have even made profit! Indie Girl really helped me come up with ideas that I never thought about and was a great way to help me become independent. I also appreicate the humor added in the book - it really was fun to read and to pursue.

While it may be modeled for artistically-minded girls, Indie Girl's advice is just as well suited for any boy looking for a hands-on guide to self expression. I found the advice inside to be creative and helpful, and use of repeatable sections made the book easy to navigate. I especially thought the "Insider Tips" sections were worth mentioning as a standout, mostly because they bring a level of detail and accuracy to the music/fashion/drama business that I hadn't seen in other books like this. Indie Girl approaches everything from an extremely practical and can-do attitude, and its what makes this book so interesting to flip through. Definitely recommend for any pre-teen or teen with any hint of artistic interest- a great starting point.

Well, what can I say about this one? It was right up my alley. Indie Girl has everything (Including organizing a parade!) and was a perfect read for me. Not only that, but I swear the authors of this book are geneouses. Not to give anything away...but under the "putting on a play" section, they suggested that the album "American Idiot" would make an awesome musical. Little did they know, two years later it would!

This book was creative and inspiring, and the writing style makes it fun and easy to read. I loved the tips and helpful websites they gave. Indie girl is PERFECT for any teen who loves do it yourself projects! 5 *'s.

I bought this book for my daughter and she loved it!
It is unique and original and totally creative. The concept is great and my daughter has gleaned many ideas from it, staging her own open mic in our back yard and even starting a band with her friends (that lasted about a week). This book has a great voice about it as well, and the graphics are really fun. It has become the number one birthday present idea for all of her friends!
