My 2 year old got this as a gift and I was very hesitant to let him play with it because I thought he would destroy it very easy. Boy was I wrong!

Its made of heavy cardboard on outside and between each page.
He had the first one for 8 months before he lost the thomas train piece and ripped the cover off. I replaced it and so far not even a rip. (There is a "pocket" to put thomas in when your done reading but if you pick up the book wrong he will fall right out)
He wants to read/play with it every night before bedtime and even carries the Thomas piece around the house.

We dont really stick the thomas piece in the track groove often because he "drives" it all over each page. Also sometimes the thomas piece will stick in the center but its not really a big deal.
Not a long book and not much of a story but it does have one friend on each page.

Overall:
If you are buying it for the story line you might be disappointed.
If you are buying for the characters and the track then you might be happy!
Be careful because you could lose the thomas piece (my little guy just started using his wooden trains on it once he lost his)

I bought this book last year when my son was 3 and very heavily into Thomas & Friends. At age 4, he still likes Thomas a lot, but has veered into many other interests.

This book is a robust collection of Rev Audry's original Thomas works dating from 40s through early 70s. Modern Thomas books and movies were started by Britt Alcroft in the 80s and have significantly evolved over the years.

In these stories, the boss is not Sir Topham Hatt-- it's the same character, more or less, but he is the Fat Controller. I suggest reading 'Sir Topham Hatt' outloud every time you see Fat Controller. Additionally, the lessons are somewhat similar to newer Thomas stories, but they are often harder and more severe. There's a negative consequence to a poor decision, but in these stories the character who fails typically doesn't have a chance at redemption-- the lesson just ends, leaving the negative reinforcement alone.

A modern Thomas story generally will show the problem situations and then show how the trains work to fix the issues they created. Diesel and a few other 'naughty' engines are the exception, but Thomas and his friends are all well-intentioned and regret their mistakes.

Again I suggest a little bit of editing and embellishment to make these original stories a bit more like your toddler/preschooler expects from Thomas & Friends. This won't work when your child starts reading, but you can probably put the book away and encourage to read other items.

The illustrations are good and the stories have a lot of background into the origins of each train. There are a few trains that aren't used any longer, but lately Thomas & Friends has been adding new characters/trains so frequently that your child probably won't take note of hearing an unfamiliar train name.

Hope this helps. If I had read a review like this one, I might have passed on this book. Or perhaps not-- despite its age and faults, we do read and enjoy it. :)

My son 3.5 y old loves all 5 books and it was a great price. Have 5 stories similar like in the movie, Hero of the Rails, Misty Island Rescue, Day of Diesels, The Great Discovery, and Blue Mountain Mistery. Yes the stories were made shorter and can sound a little ridiculuous but kids won't mind. The size of this books make it easy to carry it in your bag or kids' backpack for to go reading. I ended up buying more little golden books title of Thomas and Friends after this purchase.

These books are very hard to follow. They tried to take a movie and condense it down to a short story and they didn't do it well. Our son loves Thomas but cant get half way through any of these 5 books. We donated them within a month.

My granddaughter loves Thomas the Train and at less than a year old can tell you that she loves him and all his adventures. Good stories with morals and learning experiences for every child to learn from. One of the few children's stories that all of us enjoy.

My 2yo son loves these books. I don't know the movies so I can't say how closely they follow. The books are written pretty well but they are long!! If you're going to read this twice in one night you might want to know what you're in for.

A great set of five books of Thomas. These are from shows that most kids have already seen, so they know the story and enjoy either reading the story or being read to. A very good gift for any young Thomas fan.

It was kinda disappointing that each book is based on one of the movies (or vica version) that my son has seen countless times on Amazon Prime, I was hoping for some original content. While I could definitely criticize the quality of story telling in these books, my 2 year old seems to like them a lot so overall it was money well spent.
