The Circus of Adventure book. Another fine entry in the series, this adventure is rather original in Enid Blyton's work because it belongs to the genre called Ruritanian romance (in reference to the Ruritania of the novel The Prisoner of Zenda), It is a very good adventure too, with memorable scenes like Jack following the kidnappers and stowing away in their plane, the daring rescue.

He was made to sit down on this, and the policeman went to report at a big, untidy desk. He spoke very quickly, and it all sounded like a lot of Double Dutch to Jack n Jack’s shoulder and sent out such a stream of unending nonsense that every policeman in the place stared in admiration. Nobody was standing in Jack’s way to the door. He looked at it. He thought he would make a dash for freedom, and try to get away from these comic policemen. He was half-afraid he might be locked up for weeks. Perhaps they thought he was a beggar or a tramp?

There is not better series of books to read to a four or five year old. They're all engaging and imaginative. I think they're a good lead in to reading aloud the Narnia books. I highly recommend each and every book in the series by Enid Blyton.

This little book is one that I first read as a child more than fifty years ago. I puchased it for my 8-year-old grandson who has read another book in the series three times. What more recommendation does a book need?

I've just discovered this series and the author, Enid Blyton, who must never have had her work very well distributed in the States. That's my only explanation for why a bookworm, from a long-line of bookworms, has never heard of this charming & suspenseful series of children's books or its extremely prolific author (the blurb says she wrote over 700 books!)

The two in the series I've read so far are real Nancy-Drew style page-turners. They center on four children who manage to be more successful operatives than their beloved stepfather, Bill, who is an actual British spy. Philip, Jack, Dinah and Lucy-Ann are brave and resourceful, but Blyton has created very real children - hers aren't too perfect. They give the strange interloper to their family vacation, Gus, an awfully hard time. A very cheeky parrot, Kiki, adds a surprising amount of humor.

My 6 year old was desperate for, "just a little bit more, please!," at the end of every chapter. No higher praise for a children's book.
