David Gilmour (David Yellen For Forbes). But after 18 years David Gilmour is willing to give it up. Movers have crated the Ming dynasty furniture and sculpture and the Thai and Burmese Buddhas. Having logged 7 million air and sea miles to found nearly a dozen companies-a stereo maker, resorts, a gold mine, bottled water-he knows when it's time to pack up and go. Now 81, Gilmour insists he's been trying to retire for more than four decades.

Part story telling, part business book... All good stuff. This book is inspiring for all entrepreneurs out there and it's also a riveting read to keep your attention and make you think. I really enjoyed the way Mr. Gilmour weaved in the business principles he has learned with the incredibly successful businesses he started. Very interesting and entertaining book to consume !

4/5 stars because - as David says in the book - perfection is never achieved.
This book is ideal for someone who is prepared to read it carefully and draw comparisons or contrasts with his or her own life. The book is well-written (no indication of a ghost author) and a pleasure to read. Mr Gilmour lets his political views be known and engages in a bit of score-settling throughout the book, which many readers will find interesting. [email protected]

I really enjoyed reading this book. Truly inspired. The writer has lived a thousand lives so far. Every time I see a FIJI bottle of water I think of the author and his amazing island!

This book features a handful of great insights into the entrepreneurial process. It also shares a number of interesting business "adventure" stories. I'm glad I read it.

With that said, this book is not as well-written as it could be. About 20% of the book's content is just overlap. For example, it's not unusual for basically the same statements or even whole paragraphs to appear in numerous places. Moreover, the author mixes his autobiographical narrative directly with business stories and insights as an entrepreneur. This makes it difficult to keep the different themes (autobiography, business exploits, entrepreneurial wisdom, etc) from blurring together during reading. Perhaps in the next edition the author can find a clever way to give separate themes their own headings within the different chapters?

Also, the author has a propensity to commit the writing mistake of "telling" rather than "showing." Maybe the author would need to take on a co-author to accomplish this, but the redundant assertions can be cut out and the stories can be better told, er, "shown." Another disappointment -- why are there no pictures in the book? Pictures would go a long way to "show" the reader the tale of the book. I want to see the author's den with the portrait of Winston Churchill. I want to see a picture of the author with the Egyptian King Sadat, or in his plush restaurant in London. I want to see the sign on the beach in Fiji that says, "Beware of falling stones"!

I think the author has a real opportunity to make this book a great classic of autobiography and business. It has the potential to be the "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" for entrepreneurs, read generation after generation in perpetuity. It's just the writing that needs to be cleaned up..maybe consider a co-author, sir?

In all a great book for aspiring entrepreneurs and students of business history.

Insightful, inspiring, and more than expected. Love his sense of humor and admire his passion. The thought of not doing the same thing as everyone else, and going your own route in life..... is something that all entrepreneurs seem to have in common, at least I think so. A definite will share with friends... especially ones who are on their own path to being an entrepreneur! Maybe I myself, one day will find a luxurious place to go back to and make it my home and getaway. :)

All jokes aside, this book has opened my eyes to how much more there is in life, and where one single person can go and how far they can really reach. There's no limit to the things you can do, as long as you have the will and power to never give up. Thank you David, for sharing your life's story and amazing achievements. This has been very inspiring and made me appreciate a lot of things in life.

Thank you!

A Must Read!!!
