Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 17 years ago. Reading this book as a teenager was interesting, but I had never been through any real hardships. Reading it again made me feel both fortunate and sure that I could overcome my own "little" problems. I was so inspired by this book and a 1973 speech by Judge Sorrentino that I decided to go to law school myself. It is an incredible, but true, tale of how a young thug can develop into a respected jurist. One of the most encouraging books I've read! Super!

Paolo Sorrentino (Italian: ; born 31 May 1970) is an Italian film director, screenwriter and writer. Sorrentino was born in Naples, in the district of Soccavo in 1970 and became orphan of both parents at the age of 16. His first film as screenwriter, The Dust of Naples, was released in 1998. He also began directing short movies, including L'amore non ha confini in 1998 and La notte lunga in 2001.

Selby Jr. grew up in hardscrabble south Brooklyn and dropped out of school at age fourteen. During this time, he also began to write and was encouraged by his friends, including the author Gil Sorrentino. He served through World War II, but in 1945, when he was seventeen, a shipboard doctor diagnosed Selby with tuberculosis, and he was sent home to Brooklyn. Selby claimed that it was Sorrentino who taught him to write, but Sorrentino denied this.

You had to be there. I knew Joe and I knew Father Russo. I was also very aware of Tony (not his real name). That man was a true legend.
I just wish Joe had been fairer with his depiction of the good father. I know Father Russo was a force in Joe's life. Images of Pop's pool room brought back many memories.

Yes this is a great story, but over edited. Truth is neither Joe nor I nor any number of the guys who grow up in that neighborhood and point in time would have survived if there were drugs around. Armed robbery was okay....felonious assault was okay....any kind of thievery was okay....being dishonorably discharged was not only okay, but applauded. Drugs were NOT okay.

It was in the early 80's that I first started to read this book and, since then, I have used the EPILOGUE as inspiration to many individuals who needed to know that "tomorrow" was possible. At one point, I loaned my copy to someone and never got it back--I purchased another copy. This book is proof that change comes from within. Every parent and every individual who works with families or children of any age, should have this book in their collection of books to keep.
