The correspondence between English poet Brooke and Noel Olivier began after they met in 1908, when he was 20 and she 15, and ended in 1915 with Brooke's death in World War I. Their letters, published here for the first time, form a spirited exchange filled with romantic longing, self-reflection, self-discovery, an endless stream of emotions, and "quarreling about words.

I don't think I can be presumptuous enough to "review" this book. Really, how does one "reviews" books about the letter people wrote. It gives you insights to their minds and soul... what they were feeling and thinking then and there while they writing it ... what more can be said? You either appreciate them or dismiss them as rantings...

Rupert Brooks is perhaps known more for his good looks than his writings. His life cut short by both the ideals of "fighting for your country" and the tragic reality of war which is getting killed in it. He died young too which makes it more "romantic" a la Byron. His love letters were touching and poignant at times. But one wonders if he was in love with a woman or with the concept of love itself. I myself don't have and answer. I have been married for 20 years and I still long for an answer...

Thanks!

I have always found Rupert Brooke to be a fascinating poet, so when I was in York and discovered this little treasure (for sale, no less) I bought it. I'd started it a couple of times but never got around to completing the book. Then, I resolutely decided to read it, and I found it completely entrancing. You get something from this book about Brooke that you could never get from a biography: his yearning, passion, anger.... all in his very own words. It was hard for me to put down, and any fan of Brooke's should most definitely look into it.

Some of the most beautiful & heart felt love letters. The letters do become sad & painful as you go along. There are some superb examples of true passion in this book(provided you can find one!!!). The only copy that I had gone thru is now missing from the local library:(
