In 1974 Camelia Sadat began an angry letter to her father that was never sent. The missive was both an act of rebellion and a cathartic examination of a relationship almost too complex and emotional for words. Eleven years later that letter has grown into My Father and I, a graceful chronicle that traces her father’s life and her own, from Anwar’s childhood in an Egyptian village 75 miles from Cairo to his assassination on Oct. 6, 1981. The sound of the assassins’ bullets rang in my ears day and night. Sadat now lives with her 19-year-old daughter Lula in a green-shingled house in Needham, a Boston suburb. This is a memoir by Camelia Sadat about her conflicted relationship with her father Anwar Sadat, Egypts late President. Some parts of it are foreign to American culture, such as her child marriage at age 12, and some specific to her father and his domineering personality and polital role, but i think the main theme is something familiar to us back home. Camelia's parents married as childhood village sweethearts, but her father left her mother to marry someone glamorous and sophisticated, and had a new family with his new wife. I am sure many Americans have a parent who has done something similar. can related to the conflicting emotions of love and anger, pride and resentment. I really enjoyed this book but on the other hand I had to take off a star as sometimes its not really well written and you kind of have to read between the lines to get the authors emotions underneath and what she is trying to say.

I am a sometime friend of Camelia Sadat and have spent many hours discussing her life with her father and mother. Her book is an honest look at her early life and an introduction to her subsequent life in Egypt and the United States. She is a most interesting woman and I think her readers will find her equally so.
