Few military opponents have been praised inside the House of Commons as was Erwin Rommel, by no less a figure than Winston Churchill. This was at the time when the charismatic German general was running amok in North Africa, disrupting the British dominance of the region.

This volume traces the full remarkable career of the small, wiry man who was to become the legendary 'Desert Fox' and shows how a mild, retiring youngster quickly became an amazingly successful operator with light forces in the First World War, then proved the perfect spearhead of the devastating 'blitzkrieg' strategy of the Germans against the Allies in the early years of the Second World War. He was then transfered to the deserts of North Africa where he was to cause such havoc to the British army, only stopped by the arrival of 'Monty'.

This thorough assessment marks Rommel as one of the finest military men of the 20th century. It also examines his faults, and covers the sad end to his life when he chose suicide ahead of a show trial after being accused of plotting to blow up Hitler.

This was a pleasant read. Easy to read and understand. It is not a serious and detailed look into the Field Marshal's life. If one wishes to understand Rommel' military commands this is a good start. It supports the details of his campaigns nicely, keeping the reader engaged and interested. A welcome addition to a collection, or a good starting place on Rommel's life.

General Erwin Rommel was able to do the most with the least. Against great odds he earned the name "Desert Fox" by those he fought against; the British and their allies. Code of honor was important to him to where he cut the limited water rations of his own troops so that their prisoners would not die of thirst. The irony is that he received less respect from Hitler and the German high command than from the British and French. If there was a Nobel Prize for military genius he would have won it. He was loved by his troops and when he was recalled from North Africa hated to leave them. One of the British commanders, in a memo to his troops, referred to him as "our friend Rommel".
