Daphne du Maurier wrote some of the most compelling and creepy novels of the twentieth century. In books like Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn she transformed the small dramas of everyday life-love, grief, jealousy-into the stuff of nightmares. Less known, though no less powerful, are her short stories, in which she gave free rein to her imagination in narratives of unflagging suspense.

Nina Auerbach claimed in her book Daphne du Maurier, Haunted Heiress that du Maurier had read the Brazilian book when the first drafts were sent to be published in England and based her famous bestseller on it. "Ms. Nabuco had translated her novel into French and sent it to a publisher in Paris, who she learned was also Ms. du Maurier's".

In this memoir, Flavia Leng paints a powerful portrait of her mother, Daphne du Maurier. Mainstream Publishing.

Daphne du Maurier was fascinated by the Brontë siblings and identified with them all, but she jokingly hoped she and her sisters might emulate Charlotte, Emily and Anne one day, if only she could get her artist sister to write too. A bevy of sisters is more than the sum of its parts and it is to this. A bevy of sisters is more than the sum of its parts and it is to this protean relationship that I, as a biographer, like to turn.

In this haunting tale, Daphne du Maurier takes a fresh approach to time travel. A secret experimental concoction, once imbibed, allows you to return to the fourteenth century

There is only one catch: if you happen to touch anyone while traveling in the past you will be thrust instantaneously to the present.

I suppose my expectations were the quality of writing would be equal to her mother's. I also expected honesty which I did feel the author provided. While yes the memoir was to be about being Daphne du Maurier's daughter, it paints the picture of the mother as a saint with few character flaws. It brushes over many of the realities we know of a very distant mother as well as a father, and a set of parents very disconnected from their children. The favoritism shown to the son and the du Maurier's lack of caring or interest in the daughter who was an unwelcome 'accident' is appalling. But that was the British way at the time. The author only covers her growing up in a 'hit or miss' style with details that do not add to the storyline.

I HAVE LOVED Daphne du Maurier since I saw Rebecca many years ago.Now having started researching her life; and the basis of the writing style( and why it can be so damaging to the writer) that she used in her many amazing novels, It scares me. I am sickened by the entire history of Peter Pan as explained in the book "Neverland" and the abuse of the real Lost Boys. NOW FINDING OUT Daphne as a child was also part of the abuse because her father was a lost boy : the Author William Barrie was able to control her father and Daphne. Some of the books on Peter Pan have lots of names and dates; so A Daughters Memoir by Flavia Lent helps fill in for me some of the blanks. Why Daphne was such a sad strange person. But extremely creative.

Not quite a "Mummy Dearest" book, Flavia Lang's recollections of growing up as the child of one of the most famous authors in the world still makes for disturbing reading. As I read the book, I wondered what her siblings, particularly her older sister, felt about the revelations.

Lang has obviously inherited some of her mother's talent, and it is in some ways an easy and often funny read of a very unusual childhood. The unwanted second daughter of somewhat remote and aloof parents, she is despised by her pretty sister, who suffered greatly from the isolation of their upbringing, but develops a very close and loving bond with her beloved and clearly favoured younger brother.

Both her parents are extremely successful in their chosen career - her mother is a great novelist, her father one of the youngest and highest ranking military officers, extremely intelligent and charming, but somewhat self-absorbed and withdrawn from family and friends. But their focus is generally on their careers, with the children a definite after throught.

For many years I collect books by Daphne DuMaurier and also any biographies on her fascinating life (and can highly recommend both books by Martyn Shallcross and Margaret Forster).
I've been to Cornwall twice and spent 2 weeks in Polruan and Fowey, I've even seen Menabilly, the model for Manderley in "Rebecca".

I found this autobiography by Flavia Leng by co-incidence while vacationing in Nova Scotia in October 1994. I entered the bookstore of an Austrian bookseller in Mahone Bay and discovered the book, a real treasure. On the way home to Germany I read it on the plane without the help of a dictionary and was delighted that it was a fairly easy read (Daphne DuMaurier is not easy to read in English, I prefer her German translations).

Was amused that Flavia Leng mentioned how much she loved Enid Blyton's childrens books (who didn't???) and how much her mother detested them :).

This book made me laugh out loud many times at the antics of Flavia and her sister and brother, the children of Daphne DuMaurier. The stories presented here give a picture of Daphne's great sense of humor, an aspect not often known or remembered about her. Flavia's honest look at Daphne as her mother reveals a whole and loving, though imperfect, person. A great read and a must for hard core DuMaurier fans.
