Charlton Heston's career has included many such roles

Charlton Heston's career has included many such roles. He was Moses in The Ten Commandments; he played the title character in Ben-Hur (for which he won an Academy Award); he was Michelangelo in The Agony and the Ecstasy; he played the title character in El Cid; he has played presidents, generals, and statesmen. As an actor, he has reached a level of success and recognition few have achieved and been accorded an acclaim few have received. Now, looking back over a career that has spanned half a century and a lifetime devoted to being the best possible, both as an actor and as a man, Charlton Heston writes of what it was like to live In the Arena.

Charlton Heston's larger-than-life screen presence comes through on every page of his wonderful 1995 autobiography, which is a really great read. Heston grew up poor in the woods of northern Michigan, where he was lonely and painfully shy. He gained confidence in his high school's senior play, and as he says, he never looked back. He won a university scholarship, and there he had his first-ever date. Her name was Lydia; she was an acting student, and they have been happily married now for over 60 years

In his autobiography, In the Arena, Charlton Heston gives an interesting, behind-the-scenes look at a life and career that spanned the post WWII years, the era of live television, and the vast changes in the movie industry through the last half of the 20th century. I quite liked Heston before I read the book, but now I dislike him immensely The death of Charlton Heston was announced today. I do wish that I had never known of the politics that he favoured - it made me like him a lot less than I had previously.

Charlton Heston (born John Charles Carter; October 4, 1923 – April 5, 2008) was an American actor and political activist. As a Hollywood star, he appeared in almost 100 films over the course of 60 years. He played Moses in the epic film The Ten Commandments (1956), for which he received his first nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama.

In this autobiography - his first ever and written entirely by himself - Charlton Heston writes with candor and warmth. Now in paperback, the acclaimed national bestseller from Hollywood legend and Academy Award-winning Charlton Heston, star of such legendary films as "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben Hur".

This book could have certainly used a director's distaste for superfluity. Heston seems to have never met an anecdote, detail, or aside he didn't like. Surely he didn't have to discuss all of his 60-plus films. Heston's final chapter, a r‚chauff‚ buffet of stale ideological posturings-gun control bad, Western civilization good-also leaves a slightly sour taste.

I was interested in his biography. He has had such an astounding career and yet always put family first. He is a good example of what a happy marriage should be. It was a very interesting book and the fact that he kept a journal was wonderful, as he could put down such details of his work. He was a much busier man that I ever dreamed, doing all of those plays, etc. between the big block-busters that he did. Loving a wife and respecting her clearly shines through, and the way he included his children in his life is extraordinary. The book got a little long, but he had a long and remarkable life to show for it.

If you love old Hollywood read this book. So much insight from an author one can actually admire. Charlton Heston had many interesting stories and met many interesting people--there is plenty to dwell on. Plus, what man ever loved his family more?
