Ray Winstone The Biography: The Story of the Ultimate Screen Hard Man. by Nigel Goodall. The man behind the tough, unflinching onscreen exterior is revealed in this biography of the Emmy awardwinning actor seen in The Departed and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. From humble beginnings to the glitz of Hollywood, Ray Winstone has made a name for himself as the ultimate screen hard man. But there's much more to Ray's on-screen tough-guy image, and this biography reveals how his path to the top has been anything but smooth.

Raymond Andrew Winstone (/ˈwɪnstən/; born 19 February 1957) is an English film and television actor. He is mostly known for his "hard man" roles beginning with his role as Carlin in the 1979 film Scum. He also played Kevin, an ex-army soldier, in Quadrophenia as well as Will Scarlet in the television series Robin of Sherwood. He has also become well known as a voice over actor, and has branched out into film production.

From the humble East End to the glitz of the BAFTAS, Ray Winstone is regarded as the ultimate screen hard man. But there's much more to Ray's on-screen tough-guy image, and this biography reveals how his path to the top has been anything but smooth. His rebellious youth as a London schoolboy boxing champion is discussed, as is his expulsion from drama school, and the story of charming his way into an audition for what would prove to be his big break—the lead in Alan Clarke's Scum. The biography continues with Ray cementing his place in the pantheon of British acting greats with his breathtaking performance in Nil By Mouth, which earned him a BAFTA nomination, while subsequent roles in Sexy Beast and Ripley's Game won him plaudits and continued his tradition of portraying tough, uncompromising men. A lesser-known side of Ray is covered here, as he has tempered these roles with those in more light-hearted romantic comedies. Married for almost 30 years, and a dedicated family man with three daughters, Ray's story is an inspiring, gritty tale of a rebel made good.

The author offers a sincere (if effusive) portrait of his subject and the biography is informative to a degree -- it held my interest in spite of my reservations and I finished the book. However, the content is drawn entirely from secondary sources and not necessarily the more serious sources, and no interviews between the author and the actor took place. I knew I was reading an unauthorised biography so it is unfair to complain of that, but the biography's treatment is so superficial it reads like a magazine article and not the in-depth treatment of an interesting and substantial career that I expected. The text is repetitive and contains a number of language errors and typos. Large portions of the book describe the plots of films (with little analysis) and there are several digressions, some of which are amusingly irrelevant, such as the number of pages devoted to Vlad the Impaler of Romania (if I remember correctly). It is as if the author had grown desperate for content, a suspicion confirmed by the unnecessary glossary which bulks up the biography by twenty pages. This book is a bit of a cheat, and this is not to imply that the author intended it as such. One senses a genuine respect and affection for the actor in Mr Goodall's writing, but Mr Winstone's career deserves better than this -- caveat emptor!

I quite enjoyed this part of Mr Winstones story but I wasn't so enamoured of some of the language. I hope that he doesn't always talk like that.

I bought this book because I love Ray Winstone's films. I was hoping for more about Ray Winstone the man - instead I got a patchy review and critique of his work. Quite disappointing really.
