His work as a videographer, writer, director, and producer has included national commercials and television programs for PBS, Fox Sports, the Outdoor Channel, and C-SPAN. Although the manual is very basic with no color photos, it does include the answer to most every "how to" or "what's that button for?" question I come up with, whereas this book doesn't.

Chapter 4: The Fundamentals of Videography. Chapter 5: The Impact of Sound. Chapter 6: Using Light to Create Great Video.

I bought this book to go with my HF S100. As compared to the owner's manual, which several reviewers have done, it is definitely more colorful and of better quality. That should be no surprise to anyone who has a Canon manual; they're clearly low-cost publications that are basic at best.

Things to note about this book:

1. Very high quality; easy to read; well laid out.
2. Since it covers a number of different VIXIA models, you'll find a lot of "wasted" pages. If it was, for example, tailored to only my model, it would probably have about a third less pages. Then again, it wouldn't be as marketable to such a large audience and would not sell as well. I spend a lot of time flipping pages trying to find the section pertinent to my particular model.
3. You'll still need your Canon manual. I wanted to check how to format the SD card inside my camera, and when I finally found mention of this within the book, it told me to refer to the manual that came with the camera. Huh?
4. A lot of information within the book pertains to shooting video in general (shot composition, types of microphones, etc) and not how to use the VIXIA specifically. I would prefer to have it only focused on the technical aspects of my camcorder in greater detail, but maybe that's just me.
5. I would have liked to have seen more information explaing the various settings that are available for video resolution and frames per second, with the pros and cons for each.

Lastly, although the book is very well designed and colorful, I find myself taking the manual that came with my camcorder with me on trips/outings and leaving this book at home. Although the manual is very basic with no color photos, it does include the answer to most every "how to" or "what's that button for?" question I come up with, whereas this book doesn't. Plus, it only gives me information for MY camcorder model. The manual is also much smaller and therefore easier to travel with. I feel much safer having it with me to use as a practical "go-to" guide as opposed to this "field guide."

I had purchased this to find out information on a newer camera because the one for the camera was more expensive. It does a great job explaining the camcorder it was intended for however. Good visuals.

As I am new to using a camcorder I bought this as there are no new books on this camcorder series from Canon. I purchased a refurbished vixia that came out around 2 to 3 years after the models reviewed in this book came out. It is a good general instruction on use of a camcorder and how to maximize taking videos. However, it does not point to all the features on the newer camcorders.

My husband wanted this for his NEW Vixia camera. The book is written in a easy to understand format. However, he didn't realize that it was published before his particular model came out. So it wasn't too helpful to him. But we llok forward to any new book that comes out with info on his model. Your service is AWESOME.

As an enthusiast photographer in the '90s, I bought field guides for The Canon EOS 5 and Canon Speedlite 540EZ, and also read another for the Canon EOS 7. Those guides were excellent; they covered some "hidden" functions of the products and gave general advice on how to use each mode, what worked and what didn't work so well, etc.

I bought this book thinking I'd get something as those old guides. I was disappointed - there was almost no information here that couldn't be found in my Vixia HF200 manual; the "new" information was not related to the camera per se, but to general photo / video techniques (superficial techniques or hints, mostly) or to accessories. The color pictures are nice, but sometimes fail to show adequately the technique they're illustrating.

A good portion of this book is composed of diagrams of several Vixia camcorders. Mine (HF200) was not included, but again the diagrams of other cameras added nothing to the products' manuals. If you've already read the camcorder manual, you'll end up skipping those.

The book also repeats itself - it starts with a general overview, then goes to a somewhat deeper level with the same basic info, only with a few details more; sometimes I had the sense of deja-vu and even got paranoid and thought someone'd misplaced my book marker...

This book may be useful to beginners in photography and / or video, but if you already have a good photo and video knowledge, it won't help you much.

This is a comprehensive guide for the Vixia camcorders. It has an extensive list of their operation in the first chapters and them some chapters dealing with videography. The chapters concerning the operation were a bit lenghthy and confusing as the author tried to cover all Vixia models. The videography chapters were more useful and interesting. Generally, a good book for people buying the specific Vixia models and who are starting videography.
