I just got this book and tried some of the exercises, and I see where the negative comments come from, but I don't think they are right. The author does a service in no other book I have so far (and I have 6 shelf-feet of watercolor books). I am teaching myself, as I live in a remote area and can't get a good class so far. I have for months wished someone could look over my shoulder and slap my hand when I have too much or too little paint (or water) on the brush or the paper is not primed right. Karpinska shows pictures of just what every move you make should look like, down to the exact shine on the paper. I don't see how anyone could have done a better job. These exercises are difficult, and this is not a beginning book. She won't teach one how to do a painting in 20 minutes (as some authors purport to do). But if you really want to work to improve your technique, she shows the right exercises to accomplish this. The illustrations are excellent, and reproductions of paintings (her own as well as other artists') show clearly where application of her methods can lead. It's my opinion that a lot of watercolor artists as well as students stay away from wet on wet technique because the results are so chancy. But Karpinska shows how to move the odds of success in the watercolorist's favor. I think after working with her book I will be able to achieve the results I want, so I am willing to put up with some difficulty in order to advance.

The author divides the changing saturation levels of wet watercolor paper into six stages, explains how to identify each stage, then shows which types of brush strokes, and which level viscosity of paint on the brush, are appropriate for each stage. She includes various exercises (painting a leaf at different stages and types of paint application) to teach you what is possible, and includes step by step works in progress of her wet on wet technique. Indispensable information for anyone trying to achieve the beautiful effects which she masters in wet on wet watercolor painting. This isn't just a showcase of her extraordinary paintings, but a detailed explanation of what to expect from your watercolor paper as the wetness changes with time.

Beautiful paintings and technique. Yes the translation uses some terms that are not typical water colorists terms but it is easy to figure out what she means from the demos. I saw this in the library and was willing to pay premium price because of the awesome content. They really need to do another publishing of this one!

It's a very good book to learn about what happens with paper when you are watercoloring. Once you know more about paper it's easier to make a good watercolour. I found a little difficult to follow the exercises step by step. Anyway, it's a great book

This is a wonderful book on a subject that all new watercolorists need to master. What I really liked about this book above all was the authors discussion on saturation and the different levels of it. It is very informative with plenty of pictures and information.
