This is a great illustrated music and songbook for both children and adults alike. For anyone who would like to learn some standard and traditional Caribbean songs, the arrangements are fairly easy for piano with chord letters above which could be adaptable for playing on guitar, ukelele, steel drums, etc. Author Irving Burgie wrote many of the recognizable tunes in the book such as Day-O (1955) and Jamaica Farewell (1955) and arranged other traditionals like Yellow Bird and Michael Row Your Boat. There are also some newer songs he wrote for the book. The folk art type painting/illustrations by Frane Lessac are colorful and detailed to hold a child's attention while learning about West Indies culture and delightful to look at for adults who appreciate art. It is a thin hardcover measuring 8.75 x 11.25 inches with a glossy cover, as originally sold.

I chose this book as I sing with a group of pensioners and we needed the words of these songs for a Caribean Night. It was great to know that the writer was from the Caribean himself and we hope we did him justice. I would recommend it to anyone thinking of doing the same thing.
